Buying a car on Ebay

Hey guys, I know I dont have barely any post at all but I've been looking on the forums from time to time for a while now, just for fun and for info. Busted jack story was quite funny, ahaha you guys are crazy. Anyways I'm planning on selling my car soon, and always thought of trying to buy a car on ebay for the first time. Sometimes I see some crazy deals on ebay. I always planned on trying to sell my car privately and then buying a car on ebay. My question though is that will I be taxed alot of money or do I have a certain amount of time to put that money in a new car? Also I know I have to pay for shipping for the car but is there also a tax to register the car from one state to another? Basically what I'm trying to figure out is, Is it worth it to buy a car on ebay as oppose to trading in my car at a local dealership? I know if I trade it in I will only be taxed for the price difference. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I bought my 350ZR (04 new) and BMW 530xi Touring (06 used) on ebay, both from dealers. The Z was a no-brainer as I got it for less than going price by about 4K and it only had delivery miles on it. The BMW was a different story as it had 19K on it. I hired a company to go out and do a detailed report on it whose name escapes me at the moment but they did a comprehensive 5 page report w/ pics sent to my email. It included everything (tires, electronic equipment, cig. odor, noises, paint, windows, leather, etc., everything was looked at). Each was purchased in PA. and I live in NY so I got transfer plates good for 30 days, flew down, drove them back and registered them in NYS.
To register you will pay tax on the purchase price to do so (at least in NY you do).

ditto on Chief's post. The past 7 cars I have purchased were all from ebay. I have resold all but one and done many deals with ebay. Rules vary from state to state, but not drastically. I would research the car you want first and look into the location of the seller. Do your research on the exact car you want to bid on, it's worth it. You can buy awesome used cars on ebay for WAYYYY cheaper than anywhere else. I bought a 03 G35c from ebay for 16,500 with 34k on it and all it needed were new balljoints, a new intake and one headlight. I bought an 01 S2k from ebay as well with 46k for 17,800. Obviously the G35 was the better deal, but thats just to give you an idea of the kind of deals you can find on ebay for perfectly fine used cars.

What do you use to resell your car? I was gonna try craigslist first, do you pay fees for the local listings on websites? And when you say research you mean like carfax? I was thinking though, because I'm planning on buying an 06 or 07, I wasnt playing on having the car inspected by a professional. Because as long as there is no major problems, warranty should cover any small issues it has. Oh did you buy all your cars from dealership? I was planning on just buying from dealerships to be safe but you can usually find better deals by private seller.

i got the G35c privately and the s2k from an acura dealer in RI. Honestly I just use ebay to sell or autotrader down here in the philly area. Carfax is pretty good, but not always reliable. I would double check all carfax stats with the seller to see if they match up. I try my best to make sure that my deals are local enogh that it won't take me more than a day's drive to get there. The furthest I have ever went is to TX to buy a camry and a del sol. I have to admit, it SEEMS like TX has a lot of good deals with higher end cars...do not know if that is fact or coincidence though...

i just helped one of my friends get into a 98 3.0cl off ebay,as long as you can find it in your area i dont see why not. but you cant narrow it down by state so its pretty much just look threw them and hope ones close. theres more efficient ways to find cars close to you but i always flip threw ebay anyways.

Thanks for your reply guys. Heres my deal. Im trying to sell my car for around 25k. Its my second car, when i traded it in, I remember the dealer saying something about not taxing the whole value of the car. So I got the car for 27k but traded in a 20k car so i was only taxed on 7k. But if I were to sell my car privately, and then buy another car elsewhere would I get taxed on the whole amount? Next car would probably be around 35k so thats alot of money if its all taxed. You guys think it would be better to trade in at a local dealership, or buy a car elsewhere?

You only pay the difference of amount if dealership you are purchasing the new car from takes your old car as a trade in. so if dealer pays you 20k for your old car and sells new one for 35k you pay 15k + TTL.

You don't get taxed when you sell your car. If someone gives you $25K for it, all of that money is yours. If you buy a car from a private seller there is no tax until you register the vehicle in your state. Make sense?
