Breaking News! Infiniti M outsells Lexus GS

March 2006 Sales – Midsize Luxury Sedans:

5 = 5,265
E = 3,884
M = 2,629
GS = 2,483
STS = 2,217
A6 = 1,699
RL = 1,117

x 100

Guess all that Infiniti bashing on Clublexus didn't help . Wonder what 1SICK is feeling right now.

The 5 is way in the lead compared to the others.
Funny considering how much people bash it.

It all depends on where you live. I see lots of M35/45's and Merc E's around my area,.....but almost never see a 5'er or GS.

List is pretty good in relation to how often I see these cars on the road. The only exception is the Cadillac STS, i hardly ever see any of those.

I'd say its breaking news because the last Infiniti M was pretty much a failure, selling only a few hundred a month. This time around though, Infinit came through. It beat the Lexus GS which has always been solid in sales. It's considered one of the "big 3" so it definately has a lot more brand image than Infiniti.

You live on the West side of LA and you hardly see STS's....are you fucking blind. I see them all the time out there. In fact. I have seen MORE STS-V models then I've seen CTS-V models.

I live near Lou Ehlers so I know know what an STS looks like. I still never see them around though.

I know what you're saying. I actually wouldn't mind picking one up for that reason though =P. Everyone would be like... wtf is that?

Oddly enough the prices on these things are still pretty high.

Add me to the list after next month. I've decided to get an M45 Sport in crimson roulette. For the price you cannot beat this car, both inside and out.

However, I could imagine most of those sales being due to the M35X, which has been a very hot seller. Oddly enough, most dealerships are selling the M35X for over sticker and the M45 Sport for only a few dollars more per month. The M45 Sport doesn't sell very well, but it shouldn't surprise anyone considering it has sort of a hefty sticker price and RWD.

...and for a Nissan product, they have held their value relatively well.

Back on topic, I've been seeing quite a few M35Xs on the roads here in central NJ.

That's because most of the 5-series out there is the cheap 525i, there's a lot of badge whores out there willing to buy that garbage.

Someone actually looked this up last time this list was posted. You could take away the 525 sales and the BMW still had over a 1000 car lead on the others.

Yeah, I think it's way overpriced for what you get compared to other cars in it's class such as A6, M35, GS300, RL etc. I've driven an '06 530i and I thought it was just an average driving experience, I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would pay that much for a 525i.

I doubt it, without the 525 it would probably be just a couple hundred more then the next best seller E-class.

Post #5 and #30 for your answer

If you include the Xi model, it sold around 500 more than the E. If you exclude the xi model, it sold over 1000 more than the E.

Thought that this might be interesting to see.....Percentage increase in sales from Feb to March:

5 = 26.78% increase
E = 68.14% increase
M = 31.45% increase
GS = 21.18% increase
STS = 27.41% increase
A6 = 45.46% increase
RL = 56.88% increase

Going by the numbers from post #30, take away 1371 (525i's) from that months total of 4,153 5-series sales leaves us with 2,782 to 2,310 E-class's sold that month. So BMW sold 472 more then the E-class taking away the 525i sales. So I don't know where you're getting that BMW is still selling 1000 more 5-series then the E-class if you exclude the 525i.

BMW 5 series E-class -3884 vs 3415 none 530i sales- i believe this is the 1st time that E has outsold BMW 5 when taking 525i/xi out of calculation. I also don't think MB's number is correct. From other press release i have seen floating around at dealership, MB only sold 2300 E-class not 3884.

525i 1355
525xi 495
530i 1283
530Xi 794
530it 261
550i 702
M5 375

feb eclass- 2310 vs 2780 for none 525i sales
530i 902
530Xi 710
530it 269
550i 556
M5 345

jan e-class 2465 vs vs 3074 for none 525i sales.
530i 901
530xi 929
530it 282
550i 440
M5 522

Mercedes has been offering huge discount on the E-class, which in effect pushed E350 pricing to the level of 525i and E500 down to high end 530i range. If you walk into MB dealership, you will probably pay less for a E350 than you would on a GS300. It is that bad.

Well it had been over a month since I had seen it so I couldn't remember the exact numbers.

The fact remains that BMW could do away with their "cheap" version and still sell more cars in this category than their competitors. That says a lot about a particular car when you can remove 33% of a models sales from the marketplace and have it still be the class leader by a comfortable margin.

Besides the badge whoring argument (which I have no doubt is true), the 5-Series is by far the most comfortable of them all, space-wise that is. BMW engineers really maximized interior space without making it a land yacht on the exterior measurements. Not that the 5-Series felt so much bigger than the others, but there was a noticeable amount of comfort it afforded over the others.

Well, I think the badge is the PRIMARY reason that the car outsells the others, like the E-class. But unlike the E-class, the 5 can stand its merits too, so it's "badge" is more deserved.

But I'm not convinced about the the interior space argument though.

Exterior dimensions:
5-series --- GS --- M

L: 191.1---190.0---192.6
W: 72.7---71.70---70.80
H: 57.8---56.1---59.50

Wheelbase: 113.7---112.2---114.2

So overall, the M is only 1.5" larger than the 5-series, but the 5-series is only 1/2" wider. From this, you would conclude that the interior room should be very close with the M taking a tiny lead in length measurements (legroom) but losing in width (shoulder).

Interior dimensions:

F-Legroom: 41.5---43.5---44.2
R-Legroom: 36.0---36.4---37.3

F-Shoulder: 57.3---56.3---58.2
R-Shoulder: 57.2---55.1--56.9

F-Head: 37.7---38.8---39.6
R-Head: 37.9---37.0---37.8

Legroom: The M has the clear advantage in both front and rear legroom over the 5. Further, the shortest car (GS) also beats the 5 in legroom both front and back.

Shoulder room: The 5 was the widest by a bit, but the M has more shoulder room in the front and slightly less in the rear.

Headroom: The tallest car clearly has the most headroom in teh front but almost the same in the rear. What's also surprising is the lowest car (GS) has more headroom than the 5.

So no, I don't feel that BMW engineers "maximized" any interior dimension given the exterior dimensions. If anything, they are only on par within the group.

I am aware of the 5-Series's measurement numbers. But sitting in one, I certainly felt the most comfortable in the 5 than its main competitors (Cadillac STS and fellow American land yachts excluded). Like I said, it doesn't win by a landslide. The Infiniti M, for all its argument-winning measurements, did not feel as comfortable.

Ya, I see a buttload of M35x's downtown but rarely see any GS's. It was weird though, I was just in central Florida for a few days (in one of those Orwellian gated communities no less) and I saw probably 20+ GS's. I dunno.
