'Bout time I buy a bike...help!

I have no idea why in my 20+ years of being a car nut, I've never learned to ride a motorcycle.
I owned a minibike when I was a kid, but that doesn't count, really
I want to start cheap ($500?) but there are so many classes of motorcycle I don't know where to start. Any ideas of what vintage or class of bike is available for this amount of cash?

I could park the TL and take the bike to work, or back and forth to Blockbuster and such. I'm obviously not looking for a Kawasaki Ninja or anything to kill myself with, but I seriously plan to add a new toy to my fleet, and here's where I'm starting.

Please keep the budget in mind with your suggestions. My accountant, aka She Who Must be Obeyed, says this is about what I can spend on the purchase (not worrying about tags, tax and insurance, which would be separate from the price of the bike.)

I'd like something comfortable to cruide (work commute is only 11 miles each way) but quick enough to have fun with (I'd like enough power to do a wheelie.)

OK, thanks in advance for the help, folks!

$500.00 you can most likely get a fixer upper bike. I would advise save up money and get a real bike like a yamaha R1.

a real bike a yamaha r1? man, do you ride? no offense, but unless you have at least 3-5yrs of riding experience under your belt, i don't recommend anyone touching a liter class bike at all. why is the r1 a real bike? what's wrong with an sv650? gs500? gsxr600? r6? they are all great bikes. i've ridden with a lot of guys that started learning on supersports (600 and 750) and swapping out to liter class months later. let me tell you, they don't even dare to twist the throttle or drag their knees. they're usually the ones trying to catch up on a group ride. really, it's not the bike...it's how much experience you develop on it. it's good to start out on a less powerful bike because its less intimidating and you're able to extract more out it that way. i see guys with sv650s lapping liter bikes at the track all the time.

fast-tl - if you want to start riding, i'd expect to spend at least 1500 on a decent learning bike. on top of that probably another 500 or so on gears. for bike choice, i would go with a suzuki gs500 or an older honda cbf (f2). check out gixxer.com, they're a great source for information (not just suzuki's). as for gears: ~100-150 for an HJC helmet, ~200 jacket, 50-100 gloves, ~100 boots. There are many people that ride without jackets or helmets even. i always ride with my gears because eventually, YOU WILL go down! its just going to hurt that much more without it. good luck

With new cruisers running about $2500, surely I can find something used in my price range. I thinkg your advice about gear is sound: always wear leathers. However, I can't really justify more than $600 for the bike itself. Any suggestions there?

I agree with you on experince side - I learned how to ride on my uncles 600c Ninja. As for the Yamaha R1 - I just love the way it looks and their was a hint of sarcasm that may have not been evident.

Please read the above threads, a lot of information in them, I too am looking and starting this pursuit, but it all depends on what your looking for, a cruiser or crotch rocket?? I think it might be hard to find a descent bike in your budget of $500, you might find a somewhat descent bike for three times that.

Also, as a beginner, NEVER get the liter bikes to start out on, you will drop your bike, and get into an accident, and your chances of the aforementioned things happening will increase greatly on a bike that is designed and engineered for experienced riders. Stick to the small cc bikes, I was even told that a 750cc bike might be pushing it.

Of course always wear the gear and hopefully you don’t come out of with any major problems just scratches. Good Luck and keep us posted…

I appreciate the links. I'll keep pricing in mind as well. I'm looking for a cruiser, not really a crotch rocket. There are brand new cruisers to be had to $2000 but for that money I could buy a fixer upper classic car; I figured bikes would be much cheaper, but they apparently hold their value way better than cars. For $1500 I'd rather buy a classic car to play around and tinker with. I just thought that OK, bike is $2500 new, find one 3-5 years old and WHAM, great price, but that has been FAR from the case.
I'll go check out the threads. I'm sure I've been reading one of those already.
