Thumbs down Is the BMW X6 a Massive Sales Failure?

November 4, 2008

Where are the people who thought that the BMW X6 would be a huge success? Do I hear cricket chirping?

Earlier this year, BMW AG chief executive officer, Mr. Norbert Reithofer, announced that the BMW X6 had been already sold out for this year. According to him, BMW planned to produce 40,000 units in average worldwide, in a full production year during the product’s lifecycle. Half of the worldwide production quota will be reserved for U.S sales, which means 20,000 units.

Thus far, for the first 7 months since the X6 has been on sale, North American sales have totaled only 3,718 units. At this rate, BMW is on track to sell less than 6,500 units or only 32% of their stated figures for an entire year of sales.

Is the BMW X6 a MASSIVE SALES FAILURE?

totally agree with you. Economy is shit so you cant expect car sales to be good. Especially when the x6 is pretty expensive car.

I think its funny that people actually bought that useless, good looking thing. I like the X6 styling (specifically, the rear) but its so unpractical, its silly. X5 anyday

I saw one at a promotion for a running marathon, but that's it. Never saw one on the road. I have the bad feeling that the new TL is going to do the same.

My dealer has a 5 month wait on them.

My guess is when they predicted the 20k units being sold, that was before the dollar being so weak. So now BMW cut back on their allocations for the U.S so we wont be getting as many.

They doing that for the whole lineup.

Same here, kind of a cool concept, but I can't believe they actually produced it.

Its a pointless vehicle released at a very bad time. But it apparently drives well enough that it probably would have hit 40K 2 or 3 years ago.

Infiniti and BMW predicted around 20,000 one year sales:

EX = 11,187 YTD
RDX = 14,023 YTD

FX = 11,130 YTD
X6 = 3,718 YTD

I can go to an Infiniti lot today and walk off with a new EX.

I can't go to a bimmer lot and find X6 to ride home in.

Wouldnt call it a failure just yet.

one of my favorite designs in the past couple years. believe it or not.

seen about 10 in the NYC area.

Is it overpriced and useless? Sure. but it certainly looks good doing it.

Not a big fan personally, but dealer here is sold out and there's a waiting list... so in that respect, seems like it's doing well to me

crazy middle easterns are loving the X6. They sold out a year worth of allocations on the X6 there.

http://www.ameinfo.com/173227.html

Only failure here is that they cant keep up with the demand.

I have seen like two of these on the road. They are ugly, useless and I hate them. I hope BMW discontinues it and moves on to produce more good vehicles and stop wasting sheet metal on these god-forsaken rolling abortions.

Saw a silver one on the road today. It has a sort of presence... I think I would rock it if given the chance. It just reminds me too much of an X5 with the roof sloped. I'd lower it first before anything else.
