Wont matter since SH-AWD will be/is Acura's marketing tool.

I dislike BMW's marketing as much as the next guy but; pressue from who? The 5 and 3 series are still selling as strong as ever despite better competition.

What pressure? And if they are feeling pressure it certainly isn't from Acura.

I prefer the Subaru commercials that have the cars riding around either leaning forward or backward on only two wheels.

I think its good for BMW. Showing off their assets...no different than Acura showing off their bluetooth and Navi in their ads.

And at the people upset about it.

That is a great ad.

Kinda OT but am I the only that gets a kick out of the term "SH-AWD?" Why not just call it "SDH-AWD: Super Duper Handling All Wheel Drive" or "CNTAH-AWD: Chuck Norris Totally Awesome Handling All Wheel Drive?"

But why would they attack FWD like that, they have to feel some sort of pressure from something

When Acura advertises their bluetooth is it because they are threatened? Or is it because they have a competitive advantage?

Pssst! Its the second one!

Good point but Acura isn't saying that the other wireless capabilities in other cars are whack or anythinig like that. BMW is poking fun at FWD, they are saying it sucks like hell. Who is Acura attacking when they advertise their bluetooth technology? They're not saying that all the other technologies are weaksauce.

I can see where the Acura folks might be 'sensitive' to this campaign; particularly as MB, Infiniti and nearly all Lexus models (exc. ES and RX) are RWD, with Audi long touting Quattro (though FWD biased in the A3/A4/A6).

Most FWD brands are noteably downmarket from BMW.

Agreed... BMW is obviously making a target out of someone... specifically all other FWD cars... Acuras campaign talks up it's capabilities, but doesn't have a specific target in mind....

It's like "dont look at what we can do, look how bad others are..."

EDIT ON MY LAST POST:

Saab and Volvo are likely the targets here, not Acura specifically.

i think it's just FWD in general, not any one manufacturer in particular.

Most people don't care if a car is FWD or RWD. I think they are trying to get people to think of RWD when they think of sporty...ie they are trying to get people to care about the difference, while at the same time telling people that they build RWD cars.

So in the end the message is: if you want sporty, you want RWD...and if you want RWD, BMW has it!

Specifically:

"In the latest installment of its new aggressive ad campaign, BMW takes a shot at its competitors who use front-wheel-drive."

I think it's more of a dig at VW's "German engineered" cars. I feel bad for all the Mini owners who will feel that they are being shunned by the parent company.

BTW is anyone slightly put off by the negative tone of some of the ad's for BMW's and VW's lately? I'm not referring to this ad but there's the BMW ad that mocks all the corporate conformists who spout platitudes like "you presented some challenging ideas" with uncomfortable closeups of ugly people and the VW ad's that disparage buyers of other cars for shouting and overcompensating about their insecurites. Sometimes I get the idea that these companies lack anything positive to say about their own products or their just targeting mean-spirited people as prospective buyers.

the quote you provided is not what BMW stated. It is from Leftlanenews.com and it is one interpretation of the ad by leftlanenews.com. Much like the other interpretations we have offered. But if you want to take the interpretation of one person at leftlanenews.com as gospel, be my guest.

So I should go with the mrdeeno interpretation??? No offense but, it is pretty clear now that it is a shot at VW.

bmw has always been pretty open about what they think of both front wheel drive and v6's as opposed to i6's (apparently v6=satan).
Not really suprisded by the add.
The odd thing to me is, the fwd luxury market is shrinking. Even acura now has a awd model, and so do saab and volvo. Though the saab is just a wrx. I don't see this add being as much of a thing to separate them from the competition as it would have in the late 90's.

I agree. When it comes to BMW, there are plenty who buys them just for the name. BMW already embedded their brand into people's mind as a " high class, luxruy brand vehicles" despite what others say. Same goes with Mercedes. Many would just go out and buy a benz or bimmer simply because it shows they got money.

People who buy BMW for the name are as big as suckers as people who buy Acuras for the reliablity.
