BMW registering "M2", "M4" and "M6" names

BMW have registered the name of "M2" according to Autocar for it's forthcoming smallest BMW performance car. Likely to be priced at £25,000 at todays prices & due out in 2005 to take on the Golf V6 & Impreza WRX. Autocar also discovered that BMW has registered 4-Series, 6-Series, M2, M4 & M6. The baby M2 will be joined by an M4 Coupe & Cabrio & M6 powered by next years 6-Series V10 500Bhp engine.

Good thing they aren't going to register: V4, V6, V8, V10, V12 and I4, I6, I8, etc.

(Pretty soon all of the copy writers will need "special" registration and trademarks characters all over their copy to stave-off the lawyers )

M20® V6©

(Hmmm... this reminds me of some of the people in the computer biz that copyrighted XOR screen routines.... Oh )

I wonder how much this will help them in the war against Kia and Yugo putting 'M' badges on their "cars"

(Just in time... too!)

i dont think anyone mentioned getting rid of the 3 series. did they? M3 is just too classic a name to get rid of, the 2 series might just be a compact car line like the 1 series prototype? thats what i would expect. but the 3 series is just too well known to just "phase out" and something about the number 2 that sounds way too small. and as far as 4 is concerned wouldnt the M4 be the latest version of the Z4 M edition? as a replacement for the Z3 so as to not get M3 and Z3 M edition mixed up. and we all saw the M6 coming, from the looks of the spy pics it looks hella cool. BMW is doing some good work now IMO. but to phase out the trusty 3 and 5 series' that would be hella stupid.

The 2 door 3 series cars, like the 330Ci, will be moved to a "4" designation next year or so. All 2 door cars will have even number designations. That is why the Z3 becomes the Z4 next year. Odd numbers will all be 4 doors. So yes, expect the M3 to be called the M4 some time next year or so.
