I had a poster of one of the racing M1s when I was in college. It was going over a bump on a straight on the Nurburgring-- all four wheels were at least 6 inches above the road (every fast car went airborne there).

The M1 never got the respect it deserved. I think this might have been because it, like the Dino, "only" had a 6 cylinder engine, compared to the 8- and 12-cylinder supercar contemporaries.

I think it's more due to the circumstances under which the cars were released -- the M1 never made it to the race series it was supposed to compete in, and the Dino had the stigma of being the "cheap" Ferrari. The F40, on the other hand, gets more than its fair share of props, although I'm sure the big turbos help.

I saw that car in an auction when I was a wee little boy, made it's mark visually.

I see one quite frequently since the BMW dealer about 5min from my house has a white M1. Very nice, and a real serious collectible car.

A car I used to see in Germany

I used to see this BMW when I lived in Bavaria (1992-94)

And here's the weblink:

http://www.bmw-z1.com/

I think ths would have done well in the US, however, the "drop into the lower body" doors would not have passed crash testing.
