BMW and Apple CarPlay

2018 530i

Has anyone done a CarPlay activation through BMW Service for a Pre-2020 car?

If so, how did it go ... any hassles? Was it worth it? Did you get charged for the activation?

According to local BMW service, I need an aftermarket upgrade. ???

Everything I find seems to indicate that my car is Apple CarPlay compatible as is.

I should have the NBT Evo ID5/ID6 iDrive with wireless antenna. According to Bimmertech, my VIN is compatible AS IS for CarPlay.

From the BMW PDF above:

I meet all of those requirements.

Did you buy the car new or used? You can go to the ConnectedDrive Store on bmwusa.com and see if CarPlay is available to purchase. It was $300 for my previous 2017 M4. You need a BMW ID and have the car registered to your account.
