BMW 1-Series Coupe spanks Cayman S in German Magazine Comparo
Agent 001 just got back from Paris and Spain testing a HOT new BMW car (Look for the coverage this Saturday when the embargo lifts) when he stumbled upon this Auto Motor Sport comparison review.
The review pits the new BMW 1-Series Coupe against the Porsche Cayman S.
Surprisingly, based on the help of a lovely fraulien in Frankfurt who helped me translate the article, the new 1-Series spanked the Cayman S.
Check the stat photos for further info.
Th new 1-Series looks like it is going to live up to our prediction that it will be a game changer in 2008.
And for sure, the new leader in the bang for the buck sweepstakes!
Hmmm...if it bests the Cayman S, could it also obsolete the BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK?
Place your order Greenie!

That article is pretty vague, define "spanked?" If your comparing rear seat room then its a no brainer, but I find it hard to believe that 1 series would spank the cayman S on a moderate sized track. And when it comes to real world driving the cayman S is fantastic, unless BMW has done something magical with its clutch and shifting feel, the spanking seems very bias and untrue.

I agree with you, sounds like it's subjective.

^^ I guess if you factor in price it probably could be called a spanking, the BMW is probably close to $30k cheaper then the Cayman S(comparably equipped)

Enough of the Road & Track/Car and Driver/Motor Trend shit ...
Which one is the better car. Let me figure out if it's worth the extra $30k or not.

in terms of design... I'd take the Cayman S tho...

def take the Cayman S over the 135 - the Cayman seems more "purpose-built" to me and it looks a lot better.

am I the only one that think this was an odd comparo to begin with? It's almost apples and oranges

I think it was a valid comparison. Not obvious, but valid. Both cars have similar performance characteristics and probably have similar markets (many Cayman drivers = teh women). I'm guessing the 1 is gonna appeal to a lot of womanz.

The Mazda would spank the BMW. Hmmm...if it bests the BMW 5-Series, could it also obsolete the Miata and BMW M3? The names sound similar - MS3 and M3, so it makes sense.

Could I see, in general, a woman buying a 128i because it's the cheapest BMW now? Yes, of course. Do I think there'll be a line out the door of women signing up for one? NO.
I simply hate that connotation. 1/2 the population are women. If you remove the married mothers from the equation, I think that most cars like the BMW are going to be cross-shopped by women AND men.
Let's just keep the stereotypically misogynistic rhetoric off the board.
