Benefits of Powder Coated vs Painted wheels

I was just wondering if there was a major difference between the two. Is there one that is more durable or will last longer and not be as susceptible to chipping / flaking?

I am had a set of wheels fixed, and I had them strip the previous finish so I could paint / powder-coat them basic silver again, however, I am not sure what the best route to take is.

Any input would be great.

Thanks!

PowderCoating is definitely more durable, but once you powdercoat stuff, it's nearly impossible (as far as I know) to remove it...

If you think you might want to change colors later on, it's probably best to paint 'em...

Painting should be alot cheaper too...

like GM said, powdercoating is definately more durable and will not chip.

however, powdercoating a wheel will NEVER have the same glossy shine a painted wheel will have either.

so i guess you can weigh your options between those.

if you're looking for a basic silver, powdercoating would be the route i would choose.

Powdercoating also puts a good amount of heat stress on the wheels

Does it get the wheels hot enough to do damage?

Some say yes, many people who have dedicated track wheels refuse to powdercoat due to the stress.

you could sand blast and/or media blast the podwer coating. Its more duriable yes but you can still fuck it up fairly easily.

1) sandblasting will remove pc...although you could chemically do it like I did
2) more expensive, yes...but much more durable (usually $50 per wheel)
3) not as glossy? not if they put clear over it...

Totally not true about the shine. Most OEM wheels are powdercoated clear for durability and they shine very nicely. Now a polished aluminum wheel is another story.
