Bad Motor Mount
I just took my 01 CLS to the dealership for a 75K this morning and the technician tells me that my (front) motor mount needs replacing. I told him to show me. So he lowered the lift, got in and shifted the gears to show me. Sure enough it was a little erratic so I told him to replace both the front and the side mounts (as he recommended).
Bad thing is it is going to cost me ~$400
Good thing is it is getting taken care of. I plan to keep my CL, even when I get a new car. So it is important to me that it still runs perfectly.
Oh, they gave me an 06 TL as a loaner
First impression: Wow
Second impression: a little heavy
Last impression: Like it even more now that I drove it but it has too many doors.
Oh, anybody elses mounts go out on them, that you know of? You actually may not be able to feel it (as in my case) and might require a technician to actually check for it.

The drivers side mount went out on my first gen, but it was in a pretty bad crash, Danged oil filled ones are expensive. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't loosened it while changing the timming belt.
I have had a couple of older cars with broken mounts, but you can't expect them to be good after 20-50 years. You shure can feel it with a big block ford though. The transmition will move with the motor a bit, moving the column shifter into seccond or drive from first.

Heard some of the new mounts in the Accord Hybrid is controlled mechanically by a motor ??? Can't imagine how much it'd cost to replace one of those...
I'm pretty sure I need new mounts on of the cars, the Saturn, at its current mileage. (90K) The vibration doesn't really bother me...so I don't know how long I'll wait before replacing them. It costs $300....($150 labor)

Here's a question to more knowledgeable people: What are the consequences of driving with busted mounts ???
I ask as I personally never fix anything (well I do preventive maintenance of course, fluids, filters, plugs) but I never do any repairs until they actually fail or start failing (leaking) or unless they'll leave me stranded...

Mine went out on my 2000 TL. It was in getting a new tranny when they told me the mounts were gone too. I got the front and the two sides for around $400 myself, but at the time they said I was saving money on labor since the car was on the lift for the tranny in the first place. Since you got yours in for near the same price without extra work, I think they may have fibbed to me on that one.
I couldn't feel anything before they were going out, and honestly, now that the new ones are in I can't tell too much of a difference either. But like you, I plan to keep the car for a long time, and I assume these are important parts, so I'm glad to have them taken care of.
I too would like to know the consequences of driving with busted mounts. I know a bit but I'm still a mechanical noob compared to most here. The mounts sound really important, I keep imagining the engine shaking around in the compartment.

As the motor mounts.. mount the motor to the chassis of your car it is pretty important to have them. Otherwise the engine will just clunk into things every time torque is applied. At first though only the rubber or whatever in the mounts will brake though. They have a metal sort of safe guard built in so if they do the engine won't get too caried away, but after allot of that kind of abuse that may break, or the bolts, or something near the engine may break.
It is good to have the engine secured to something. I did buy a 83 golf for 30 dollars once where the metal on the chassis that the motor mount had attached to had been torn away. The engine was held in place by a chain (go rednecktech). Can't beleive I sold that for 550 bucks.
