Bad accident on track involving a Vette and an 18 year old
I dont know what these parents were thinking giving someone who's not skilled/mature a Vette and then turning him loose on a speedway. Although it was dumb, I still feel bad for the family and kid...
And Insurance companies....i won't even start. Someone can recover a lot of function w/ rehab after a TBI.

He drove it fine for 2 years.

He did make it two years, which is pretty good. I really think it depends on how you raise your kids and one would think the track would be a good thing. He wants to be able to drive it fast you know so logically a track would be a good safe environment. He may not have had the experience that others older then him have but he really wasn't doing anything "stupid" per se.
Best of luck to him and his family

First of all, it was at a dragstrip, not a road course. Second of all, he drove it just fine for 2 years as noted above. Third, the circumstances of the crash are strange, according to the article below. What really happened here? Did the kid pass out or something?
C'mon people, it took me all of 5 seconds to find this on Google. Anyone care to revise their opinion?

God that's terrible. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I don't think it's wrong to give a son or daughter a performance car if they are of a level of maturity and drive it responsibly. I agree that a car such as a corvette may have more performance than a driver with little experience needs, but the same can be argued for many older drivers who also by a performance car.
On a personal note, I really hope the kid continues to improve. I've been down that road, and had to re-learn such things as walking, talking, and writing. After six years I'm still in therapy from my accident. I know it's extremely expensive therapy and care, and I'm thankful that it was covered by our health system.
Good luck Casey, I truly hope you recover.

The gift and the curse... Sad. $1200/day I feel sorry for the kid and his family. No amount of, "he shouldn't have had a Vette in the first place" will dimenish my humanity. Give him some credit. He was on the track and not in traffic. I think that shows a little maturity on his part, which is probably why Dad decided that he was mature enough to have a Vette.

Bad things happen, this could have happened to any vette owner/driver.
When I used to Auto X there was a family who had a 16yr old daughter at the time that co-drove their family Z06. She had started out in shifter carts as a child and she could out drive 80% of the people that would come out.
Its not like this kid was pulling a Nick Hogan and racing on the freeway, he was on a sanctioned track like he should have been and shit happened. I hope he recovers.
Title of the thread has nothing to do with the story and should be changed.

It annoys me when people post things about what people should and should not be driving. Don't let your envy for another person diminish your humility, we should all be hoping this kid pulls through.

There's nothing wrong with the kid having a Corvette. Teenagers kill themselves all year long in cars with 1/4 the performance. I wouldn't expect the insurance company to cover the medical bills either. You assume liability when you enter the race track unless you have some sort of arrangement with your insurance company.

06 Corvette and the other person racing did not see his the kids brake light at the end of the track. I doubt his brakes didn't work, but dont Vettes nowadays have the "black box" inside to tell you what happened at the accident? Wow...18 is too young of an age to have this happen. I hope he recovers fast.

It isn't new for an insurance company to not cover those that take their cars to the track.
Me thinks the family thinks they deserve to be covered just because they pay the premium or if it isn't explicitly stated in their premium that they wouldn't be covered in such an incident. To that I ask, if it isn't stated, then why assume it's covered.

While there isn't technically anything wrong with giving a 16 year old a 400+hp Vette, you can bet your ass my daughter will not be getting one....

idk what everyones complaining about...
you can give a kid a civic and he can roll it at 120 mph...
if your gonna drive fast, you'll do it in anything...
is it easier to lose control of a 400hp vette?...yes.. can you drive it like a normal car? yes..

Damn. It really does sound like he passed out or something. No brake lights were seen after he made it down the strip??? I hope the greedy insurance company gets hell for this. Yes insurance doesn't cover this kind of thing (racing on a track), but still we are talking about a kid here and his opportunity to possibly recover from this. It's an outrage that they can't make an exception all in the name of protecting their profits.

there's a HUGE difference between giving a young kid a Civic compared to a Corvette. Just because you wouldn't drive differently (even then I find that hard to believe) doesn't mean that everyone else would.

a standard at that.
my first two cars were a 944 and a honda accord wagon... i knew what i had in both cars... one was more fun to drive then the other for sure... but did i feel like going 150mph everytime i got in the porsche?...
i knew better than to drive retarded though. i dont think i took any car over 100 until i was almost in my 3rd year of driving...
all im saying is giving a kid an expensive car doesnt doom him.. kids will make decisions on their own.. whether they are given a
sports car or a pickup truck....

Reading comprehension, FFS. There is zero mention of racetrack here, just the insurance company trying to pinch pennies on this poor family.
"Bicknell had to go through several operations, including one to remove a piece of his skull, and has since spent time at the rehabilitation center. He currently lacks the ability to communicate or walk.
Barry Bicknell said their insurance company has denied coverage for his son's rehab center stay. The company said it didn't believe the treatment he received would improve his condition.
Bicknell's family and doctors disagree, believing his condition can improve with skilled care. But without insurance coverage, the family said it cannot afford the $1,200 a day it would cost."

Plenty of experienced drivers wreck their cars at the track. I don't really see the point in bashing the kid or his family. There are plenty of kids and young adults that race carts and cars. At the track there are known risks.
It's sad that this young adult is going to be living the rest of his handicapped life at the expense of the tax payers.

Despite how "mature" I "thought" I was when I first got my license, I certainly was not ready for a Vette. After owning one, I now know the temptation to get aggressive is too great--and when your young you often dont think twice about it when temptation arises. You get aggressive with the Vette, it gets aggressive back at you and if your inexperienced, it will bite you in the ass---you will end up in a wall or tree eventually.
Once again, my prayers go out to the family and the kid.

Kids do kill themselves in cars with 1/4 the performance, so that means you'd want to give your kid a car with 4X the performance and increase their chances even more? Doesnt make sense to me.
