Baby on the way, buying a coupe?
Hi Guys/Gals - long time member, occasional poster here.
Baby on the way - and its about time that I replace my 2003 Accord which has about 150k on it. I am thinking of getting an Infiniti G37 Coupe while keeping my TL as the primary transportation for the baby.
Everyone tells me it is counter-intutive to buy a coupe with a kid on the way and I should consider an SUV or a Minivan. I mean, it is one baby, and I am keeping the TL and 99% of the time I'll be in the G37 coupe by myself. Plus - my sister and I grew up and my parents only had a 2 door Chevy Beretta and a 4 door Honda Accord and we were fine - couldn't even afford a bigger car if they wanted to.
Anybody here think I should buy an SUV now and then wait til I trade in my TL to get a coupe? We are also thinking of having another kid 2-3 years after the first one. Any thoughts / criticisms would be appreciated since I know many of you here have kids and are car enthusiasts.

Some people will tell you to forget it and some will tell you to go for it. Go to a dealership and see how roomy the back is.
I drive a M3 coupe and have 2 car seats in the back at least once a week. The front seats slide forward and up which make it really easy to get the kids in/out.

However to answer your question I don't really see the issue if you have the TL to drive as well unless that is your wife's car? If they are both and you just drive which ever you feel like then get the G37 coupe and just drive the TL on the days that you need to put car seat in the back. I personally don't think the access to the rear in the G37 is that great so I would think a baby seat would be a pain.

Idiot. Kiss the rest of your life goodbye, or at least $250,000. I smell a used mini-van in your future.

I just don't understand why everyone thinks that one kid needs so much damn room - how much stuff could an infant possibly need?

I have 2 kids. When I drive them in my TL the youngest sits behind me (1). She is still in a rear facing child seat and I have to put my seat way up. Very uncomfortable. I probably couldn't even drive if my 3 year old was behind me.
My wife drives a Chevy Trailblazer and it is very comfortable in that vehicle.
I drive a 99TL which I'm sure has very similar back seat room as your 07. I'm 6'1" and 195lbs. I hate Whoopi Goldberg with a passion and enjoy drinking beer. I have very hairy nipples.

Yea kids need a lot of shit. Yes you'll be hauling a lot of shit.
Try having twins...and I do it with a Prius. We manage just fine...but I'll be honest. I'd rather have a Ford Flex or Dodge Durango.
One child...You'll more than likely be putting the car seat in the center of the rear (considered the safest place). One kid and one decent sized car should be all you need for now.

Baby #1 will end up requiring way more stuff than you could possibly expect.
My experience - when our first baby was born (almost 13.5 years ago now...uggh), I had a '91 Integra and my wife had a '87 Accord. A couple of years later, we sold the '87 Accord and got a '00 Accord. I sold the Integra in '01 and we got a second Accord ('97). It wasn't until 2003, before we got a SUV. At that point, our son was almost 5, and we were trying to have baby #2 (who arrived 2 years later). What does all that mean? We got by okay in a household with one coupe and one sedan for quite a while. But, it just ended up being much better to have some room in both cars (i.e. 2 sedans, or 1 sedan and an SUV). Now that we have three kids....

i know several people with kids and coupes.. seem to manage just fine.
if folding the seat up twice for every trip is considered a difficult task for someone, i suggest you either join weight watchers or hit the gym.
in your case, you have 2 vehicles, so it really doesnt matter.

For what it's worth...
The space will likely be an issue. Keep in mind, baby's are small, but their stuff is not. I honestly believe you need more backseat room for a toddler than you do for a kid old enough to be out of a carseat. Not only do car seats themselves take up a ton of room, but keep in mind that short legs stick straight out. It's the three year old that will be kicking the back of your seats...not the 8year old.
Then there's the stroller, diaper bag...all that stuff. And yes, you've got a second car, but there will be times when you'll have to trade cars, one will be in the shop, or you will just have to be the one to pick the kids up.
I went through the same dilemma, somewhat, only the car I was shopping for was the TL, and the strike against it was that it was smaller than the alternatives. It "just" works for a 5 year old and 3 year old. My wife's vehicle (Ford Expedition) is the regular people mover.
I'm not saying get a minivan; few people choose the minivan because that's what they want. Most people would like to have the sports car, coupe...whatever. Being a parent mean compromise. Do you imagine that most parents walk around with a kleenex of someone else's snot in their pockets because they like it? At a certain point, you have to own up to what your life has become.

And folding the seat up isn't difficult, but it's a needless annoyance. Why invite that upon yourself?

I'm so glad I sold my Accord coupe for the Speed sedan. Even with the sedan I sometimes have to squeeze to get the car seat in the back. And I can't even imagine trying to get the seat into a coupe if you're parked in a tight parking space. With that said though, if you're truly planning on using the TL 99% of the time and the coupe only 1% then I don't see the issue.
