Shoud probably be in Car Talk but great find none the less.

ESPN2 has had that camera on hand two or three other times and I've often wondered if somebody had captured it.

For Top Fuel and Funny Car it's four runs and done.

I read somewhere that the top fuel cars hit 60mph through the first half rotation of their wheel.

Cool vids, but not as fun as watching in regular motion.

Don't think so, even if there were zero slippage. The tires are 36" diameter. Do the math and half a roll-out is about 5-1/2 feet. Top Fuel cars are known to hit 100 MPH at 70 feet or so off the line (about 0.9 seconds).

Isn't he implying that there IS slippage and the car isn't going anywhere yet the tires are rotating?

If the car isn't going anywhere and the tires are slipping then how is it going 60mph?

To kinda give you a perspective of timing and how fast they are going - it looks slow on tape, but in the last segment you can see the christmas tree light... It is blinking at 60 cycles/sec... And the car is moving a few inches each 1/60th of a second.

Clutch aside, the hardest the car could possibly accelerate would be if there was zero tire slippage. What I was saying was that even in that ideal state the math doesn't work out to support what fdl had heard.

What you are saying makes sense. But i do recall reading that somewhere. I'll have to try and dig it up.
