Yes, but the most recent RS4 was based on the last-generation S4, which was a 6, so if he's comparing the RS4 to the S4 on which it was based, his statement is accurate - it was a 6.

The current RS6 is a twin-turboed V8 with 450hp. The "new" RS4 isn't out yet. I don't believe that the details have been finalized yet, either.

And, yes, the last RS4 was wagon only, the Avant.

The new S4 killed the M3 in this month's Car and Driver, 96 points to 90. They said that it's in a class by itself.

And, the RS6 beat the M5 in the same issue. Audi's getting serious about this performance thing!

He was talking about the S4 not the RS4:

I believe that Cus is right and that the new RS4 will be the V8 TT like the RS6.

But as for current gen KCPreki11 is right. Only other difference is that I believe the RS4 has bigger turbos.

The rs4 hasn't been released with the same body/chassis as the new s4. Therefore you have to base your judgement on the previous bi-turbo s4. In that case the Rs4 is a twin turbo 6, with stiffer suspension and its just a plain out fast car. The s4 was a bi-turbo 6 that had stiffer suspension and more power than the a4. It was very quick and it has a lot of potential.

Hi. I have a TLS and I was following a friend after a Maxima meet when I ran into an Audi that was badged as RS4. It seemed like it was a sedan. I have a video of it. Is this really an RS4? I shot the video because I had never seen one before. Here it is!

all RS4's are avants. If his sedan was badged RS4, i would almost consider that german rice.

Last gen S4 and RS4 were TT v-6.

Newest S4 is a 4.2 v-8, the new RS4 is rumored to be the TT version of the 4.2L which is also found in the RS6. I would assume they would turn the boost down a notch as usual. So 440 hp RS4 sounds good to me.

word, thats what I said.

Oh and I wouldn't consider a rebadged S4 rice. I know of a couple of S4s that have the bigger turbo upgrade and suspension. This along with the front bumper pretty much makes it an RS4 sedan (vs avant). They look awesome!

I met a guy in NYC that had an S4 with bigger turbos, upgraded suspension, RS4 bumper and I think the fenders rolled. Car looked ridiculous! Not rice, just nasty (in a good way)!!!

You obviously missed my point. I wasn't saying anyone was right or wrong. You're right in that the current S4 is an 8. My point was that the S4 on which the only RS4's in existence were based (considering that that's the context of this thread) is a 6.

Asking a bunch of M5 owners/die-hards for their opinions on the RS6 isn't going to give you unbiased viewpoints. Of course they're going to think the M5 is better. I was actually surprised at how positive some of them were on the RS6.

My favorite comment, though, is, "Maybe they couldn't handle the M-versions and found the Audi's were more capable and let them go faster. " No, a bunch of former race-car/professional test drivers just can't handle those darn M3/M5's because they're just too challenging to drive. Oh, please.

Asking the M5 guys for objective opinions is like asking the CL-S die-hards on this site if the 330, Z, G35, Maxima, etc., are better cars. A strong majority are going to point out the downside of those cars, just like the M5 guys are going to shoot down the RS6. Human nature.

True ... but come on dude, I have to protect BMW at least right?

As for all these cars you mentioned, I am just glad that I own one of them. I am happy with what I have, and all the respect for owners of these fine automobiles!

What's interesting is ...

Handling: M3 gets 8/10
S4 gets 10/10

yet the M3 does better on the skidpad(roadholding) and emergency lane change maneuver?

Hehe - but, of course! It's just nice to see a non-BMW product at the top of a C&D comparo for once!! :P

I wish they'd included the Volvo S60R in the test, as I'm really curious to see how it would stack up in this class. 300hp, all-wheel-drive, driver-adjustable suspension, with a 0-60 in the low 5's, according to the Euro mags. Plus, MSRP is under $37k; loaded including NAV - around $42k. That seriously undercuts both the S4 and the M3.

S60R is a value propsition compared to the M3/S4. As is the case between CLS and the 330i.

I think that C&D (or some other mag.) did do a M3, S4, and S60R comparison. The results were ...

M3 - Best performance.
S4 - Best daily driver.
S60R - Best value per dollar.

I forgot which magazine did this, there are posts on forums w/ scans of the pages.

It was a magazine in Europe, I believe. I was hoping R&T or C&D would do one, as well.

Just to clear up any leftover confusion. The b5 chassis S4 has the 2.7 liter twin turbo V6. This was available from model year 200-2002. There is no 2003 S4. The 2004 S4 is based on the new design B6 chasis. It has a version of the 4.2 liter V-8 that is shortened about 52mm in order to fit in the engie bay. The B5 RS4 was only available in avant form (station wagon) and it was no available in the US or Canada. There are a couple in the country people have brought in. It had the same 2.7 liter block with bigger turbos and intercoolers, a different head for better hig RPM flow, better internals, stiffer suspusion, bigger fender flares to accomodate the stock 255mm 18" wheels/tires. It came with really nice leather Recaro seats and the european NAV with DVD svreen in the head unit. The stock hp was 380 hp, but a chip would bring it to 420hp. Actually the S4's with RS4 turbos are pretty fast and have better bottom end because of head design. I've seen times as low as 12.2 for S4's with RS4 turbos and other miscelaneaous parts. The fastest S4 I know of ran an 11.8...but I think it had considerably more work than most others.

As for the B6 RS4 we only have rumors. I have heard of twin turbo 4.2 liter V-8 similar to the RS6, but I've also heard of a twin turbo 3.0 liter engine as well. All jsut rumors. The best rumor is that this next RS4 will be available in the US!
