Audi A6, Any experiences?

I figure I will post this over here for some unbiased (well at least not Audi biased) opinions.
Anybody have any experience with the Audi A6? Maybe a friend has one?
I am contemplating considering an 07, with low miles. There is quite a bit to choose from around here. I don't know much about them. How is the power, handling and maintenance?
I was at my mechanics a few months ago and he was doing a timing belt in one and said it would be over $2k, because he had to take the nose off of the car. Also, when do you change the belt?

Thanks, any input would be appreciated.

A buddy of mine has a 03 A6 and his brother has an 05 A4. Both are turbos so it is never a question of if you will have to replace it but when. I like the interior of both but the Germans don't believe in cup holders at all. The newer Audis have a look to them that I think is timeless. Add the large grill and the LED running lights and that thing is beautiful. Better than the BMW or the Benz IMHO.

You are right about the maintenance with the all wheel drive versions. $2k is a deal for the timing belt and $1.8k of that is labor because not only the front has to come off but the radiator, the serpentine belt, power steering pump, alternator, water pump, and other stuff have to be removed just so you have room to get to the timing belt and tensioners.

I was never a fan of the turbo lag and they have dual turbos but I still can sense a very slight lag when flooring it. The way my friend gets around this is to use the auto stick (not sure what Audi calls it) and to downshift quickly to spool up the turbos before he actually needs the power. Sounds weird but he is a pro at it. He can take a curve nicely but he has aftermarket struts also so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it or not.

Maintenance aside, I think they are good cars. That is my unbiased opinion. My biased opinion says get a TL and you will be much happier.

Thanks a lot for the info.
Do you know when the timing belt replacement is recommended?
I would most likely get a non turbo. (because of cost)
Their is a V8 option also, but very few around and more cost again.

I don't know too much about them experience wise, but you should get one.

They are .

Besides...Audi has improved their reputation quite a bit from their bad streak. They may not be Honda's, but who cares.

A6 is sex.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice plush luxury ride with class. I really liked the ride when I drove a 3.2 almost two years ago. I ended up getting an 05 A8L and for the very short time I owned it, it was a terrific ride. I know juniorbean owns one, maybe he'll be able to chime in later on.

Why would you not post this in an Audi forum? I don't think someone would be biased to the point where they'd lie about issues with the car, at least I hope not. If you post it in an Audi forum, you're asking an audience full of Audi owners

the current gen A6 has been pretty reliable. i say go for it. i think juniorbean has one?

and i think the 3.2 uses a timing chain so no belt to replace. sounds like someone trying to rip you off.

It's true... we do have one!!

We had an A4 before it which we purchased new in 2005 and we loved it. The dealer here was also phenomenal... and their service is also a HUGE reason we decided to get another Audi. The A4 was relatively trouble-free, but we were expecting the A6 to have more issues since it has more technology.

Well, so far we were wrong. It has been in for one minor issue with the key not being recognized all of the time which was fixed with an easy ECU update. It was also in b/c the trunk release was shot and the trunk would not latch. Another easy fix. And each time my wife was given a loaner Audi, and if she was not able to pick up her car on the same day (b/c of working late), they kept her car overnight and returned the loaner in the morning... and her car was always detailed and waiting for her.

As for the car itself... we love it. We love everything about it... from the ride to the features to the interior, and so on. Highly recommend it!

FWIW, we bought it late summer 2008. It was a certified pre-owned 2006 with about 46k miles. We traded in her 05 A4 which had about 54k miles and paid the difference. We got a killer deal on it... so the difference was negligible, and as much as she loved the A4, she loves the A6 more. We also bought the care package, so in addition to the 2 year/100k mile warranty we now have 3 more years (totaling 5 yrs/100k), plus all of the scheduled maintenence through 100k are covered.

I think my guys said that he needs to replace his and he just went over the 100k mark so I'm assuming that the belt replacement on the Audi is similar to the Honda/Acura schedule at 105-110k. He has the 2.7 liter V6 turbo which is pretty quick (turbo of course) and he told me that the larger 3.2 V6 is much slower. I've never ridden in one so I can't say for sure.

I have a A6 4.2 S-Line for about a year, the only issue has been the center console not staying shut. Other than that quick dealer fix, it has been just fine.

Like any German car, you have to be proactive about the maintence, but if you treat it right you should be OK.

Are you looking at the 3.2 or 4.2?

I just picked up a 07 RS4 and after driving a 06 S/C TL... I know I have to be very on top of maintaining the car compared to the TL

Thanks again for all the input guys. I just like this forum, I may ask about Mustangs later
Ok, so I had to go test drive one today. Wound up test driving an 06 3.2 with 26k miles.
I have to say it is one real solid car and a very smooth nice ride. I just think I am not quite ready for the more luxury sedan, type car. It kind of drove like my mother in-laws Buick, not that there is anything wrong with it, but I think I need a little more sport. They did have some limited addition S4, where only 250 were made. This car pretty much ruined me for looking at any other cars.
I may try to see if the regular S4 works for me. But I think I may be leaning back to the TL-S. Money is a bit tight now, because my wife just bought an Accord, so I have a little time, to look.

My granddad has an 1999 A6 and its a really nice car. He loves the car and it has 125k on it and its still going. Now up until 100k it had an extended warranty. He said that it paid for itself. According to him that just the maintenance alone can run over 1k let alone when something goes wrong. He still has it and loves driving it just be prepared because it might cost you. Just make sure to get a good warranty.

It depends on the model and the year.

The older A6 2.8s aren't bad but if you're looking at the previous generation A6 4.2 or S6 be prepared for some sphincter clenching maintenance bills.

Timing chain tensioner replacement on the V8s are not cheap $$

Auxiliary radiators tend to corrode and go bad on the V8s. $$

The previous S6s were turbo 4.2s so you've got the 4.2 pain and turbos. The new S6s are V10s but I don't think you're talking about dropping $75k on one of those.

Unless you HAVE to have a car right now, what I'd suggest is you wait. The 2009 A6 got a 300hp 3.0 with a supercharger. It's a better engine than anything that Audi has had in the A6 (other than the V10) in forever.

Wait 18 months and you'll be able to steal a used one.

If you need one now, I think the A6 3.2 S-Line is the way to go.

I'd hit up the AudiZine or AudiWorld forums.

You should look at a V8. It is a different beast, you can get 0-60 5.8-60. sec. That's almost 2 sec faster than the 3.2. And the S-Line adds a sportier dynamic to the car.

If you have questions about Mustangs then fire away in a new thread though.

B5 S4s are going for CHEAP right now. I'm not sure how reliable they are and stuff exactly, but check this one out: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/1080871833.html

charliemike how much did you get your S4 for btw?

Just kidding about the mustang thing.
This S4 has a bit high mileage for me.
I bumped into an S5 today. This car pretty much ruined me for any other car. I may just buy a 02 Accord, and save my money for the S5, I know I am dreaming.
Will most likely keep looking for a good deal on an 07, 08 TL.

I don't think the Special edition S4 is any faster than a regular one. It was just a limited production, rare color, diff wheels type thing.

That car is so much fun to drive. The sound of the engine alone is an adrenalin rush and how smooth it is at 130...

What about an 04-05 S4? Those can be had pretty cheap these days.

That's a S4 DTM I'd guess. Save your money and get a regular S4. Nothing there worth the extra $$ IMO.
