I'm doing some long range planning here. Thinking of buying a new car in about a year. Probably will be either the soon-to-be-released Audi A6 3.0 which I saw at the NYC Auto show the other day or the BMW 5 series (not at all impressed with the M-B E for myriad reasons). Between the two I think the Audi offers a lot more bang for the buck and is the better overall car.

I am put off, however, by the Audi's relatively dismal reliability record in Consumer reports...particularly related, it seems, to their 3.0 supercharged engine. For any of you who may have any experience with this, what is it that is unreliable about this engine (like the well known hpfp problem - since recalled/repaired - in BMW's turbo engines) and what steps, if any, has Audi undeertaken to make this powerplant more reliable.

Ultimately which car would you choose if given the choice? I believe they're roughly in the same price range with the Audi costing maybe $2-4k less.

 

I'm a pretty sane person, so I would choose the A4 2.0T.
