Assembling America's Least Reliable Car

I found this article very interesting. Basically, it compiled a "nightmare car" combining components from all the least reliable vehicles in Great Britain. The compilation consisted of:

The 'body parts' of the 'Nightmare MK1'
Make and Model Car part
Audi A8 Brakes
BMW M3 Suspension
MG TF Engine
Land Rover Freelander Gearbox
Mercedes-Benz V-Class Ignition
Renault Megane Electrics
SEAT Alhambra Air-conditioning
SEAT Toledo Heating & Cooling systems
Volvo C70 Steering system

Nearly 40 percent of BMW M3s require repairs to axle and suspension components alone each year, while the same proportion of Renault Meganes report an electrical fault.

One in five Land Rover Freelanders suffer transmission glitches each year and the same number of Audi A8s will need repairs to their brakes.

Close to a quarter of MG's TF sports cars will experience engine troubles, while if you like keeping cool, beware the SEAT Alhambra; more than one in eight will need their air-con fixed during a typical year.

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/07/14/p...ike/#continued

What would America's Nightmare compilation look like? Trying to use newer cars...

Here's my attempt:
Honda Accord Brakes
BMW M3 Suspension
Mazda RX-8 Engine
4T65E-HD (Impala SS) Gearbox
Kia Sedona Ignition
Audi TT Electrics
Mitsubishi Outlander Air-conditioning
Buick Enclave Heating & Cooling systems
Chevrolet Colbalt Steering system

Mazda 3 Body Rust (I've seen a couple with rusty wheel arches)

Feel free to add more categories.

fixed that for you. actually there is a way to seperate the rotors without using a press.

Also, pretty much every Chrysler product have horrible interior fitment. Every bolt and screw is different size. Same shit in some of the GM products.

BMW trunk hydraulics and BMW door handles. I've gotten 4 new door handles at 1K a pop and 2 new trunk hydraulic kits that cost 1K each, but the second one leaked and did 5K in damage to other electronics...

audi RS6 motor instead of the RX-8, iirc every one imported here (or damn near close has been replaced at some point)

and if you want to do brakes, just look to the 2000-2004 toyota tundra, with how many sets of those have warpped

. I'm not good at math but that looks to be $11,000 in door handles and trunk components. Out of pocket?

The automatic climate control panel from the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe....

When it works, it's fantastic but the A/C computer likes to slip into comas on occasion, usually when it's dark and raining and when drying out the inside air to keep the windows clear is critical. The forums are peppered with people who have this issue and I had it myself.

I would replace the MG TF engine with the BMW N54/N55. At least the car will be fast for the 15% of the time it's acutally running

Can I go classic? The rear bumper supports of 70s-80s Olds Cutlass Supremes. They would fail quickly, and the rear bumper would just fall off, but one side at a time, so you wind up dragging one for a bit. They couldn't be welded back unless the gas tank was also removed, unless you wanted to risk blowing yourself up. For me, it was emblamatic of the most miserable car I've owned. At least I met a nice girl who had some rope.

Anyway, for modern cars:

Audi A4 water pump
BMW 335 high pressure fuel pump
Aging Subaru head gasket (throw in a Legacy GT's turbo with the banjo bolt to risk oil stravation)
Ford Mustang manual transmission or
Chrysler auto transmission
Chevy Malibu wiring
Mazda rust
Various pre-recall Ford and GM electric components noted for spontaneous combusion
The slightly older Chevy inline 4.
Throw it all together with the love, attention and cost cutting measures of the folks responsible for the Chrysler Town & Country and Land Rover Discovery.

Yeah, classic or modern, build your own car. I was hoping people would make their own list so that we could see what the most unreliable cars would be composed of.

Chrysler did make some good transmissions in their day...the torqueflite727 wasn't so bad was it?

Extended warranty that cost nearly that much! They've covered about 22K in repairs so far...

I forgot to add Honda/Acura brakes, the rotors are warped on my MDX

SOHC I4 from a mark one Neon. They had head gaskets blown at less than 10k. I snapped 4 timing belts and it drank oil like beer. Exhaust manifold was crap, it leaked too (thankfully the CO never made it into the cabin.)

Alternators from the 1985-1989 Hyndai Excel. Those things were getting replaced more often than the oil.

3G TL dashboard and seats. Both get more cracks than a bicycle seat.

Power steering cooler from a 4th Generation F-Body. A thick metal pipe that basically joins the two upper radiator hose portions, located between the block and the top of the radiator. It does the exact opposite of it's intended function. I wonder why?

Honda brakes, period.

rear shock mounts from an E36 M3

E46 subframes

Front suspension from a 350Z

Ford Modular V8 heads

Early '90s-mid '00s VW electronics, or R53 Mini electronics/Cooper S supercharger

Subaru banjo bolt oil feed

Ford Pinto gas tank

My All i need for my Trans Am is 10 & 12mm sockets. They pretty much take apart the entire car.

Volvo 240 interior. Volvo used poor plastic back in the day and nearly every plastic piece inside every 240 is cracked and/or has defects in it. I have replaced 95% of the interior in mine and have not been able to completely finish it because certain parts that are undamaged do not exist.
