Anyone have experience w/selling a car on ebay?
Hey guys, I'm selling my fathers Saab for him, he wants to try the Ebay route, I've sold a few things on there but not a car. Was wondering how out of state title paperwork goes, if theres anything special I need, how much to ask for a deposit after auction, how soon to expect the depost + rest of payment. Any information would be great.

follow other ads.... Make you state sale is AS IS even though selling a used car AS IS is assumed. Lots of pictures to document so Buyer cannot come back and say this was not noted... Good luck.

Be careful with the buyers, I sold my brother's M6 on there and the first high bidder didn't go through with the transaction. I had lowered the reserve price and the buyer's bid met that amount so he became the high bidder, he did pay for the $125 transaction/listing fee and I re-listed.
Overall it was a annoying process for my first eBay car selling experience, and eBay was also worthless they want you to work directly with the buyer to resolve. Fortunately the buyer was reasonable after he admitted his mistake.

I would definitely try craigslist, no fees and you will sell it quicker.
As far as eBay is concerned, it's just like selling a car on your own when it comes to paperwork. With out of state buyers, make sure the money or check is real and fill out a bill of sale just for your own records. You can typically find a document on your state's DMV website.

I'd try Craigslist, AutoTrader, or other local classifieds first. I'm sure others have had good experiences with eBay, but just seems so much easier and simpler to sell it locally than to have to worry about selling it to someone out of state + not having to deal with eBay rules or comission.

I have sold numerous vehicles off craigslist, often times even out of my house and have never felt threatened. I usually try to do some research on people once they email me and I get their name.
What kind of price point will the car be at? That also makes a difference.

I have had luck on both eBay and CL.
These days I turn to CL first... since it is free. Thing with CL is that you should be prepared to get low-ball offers left and right. Example, when I sold my Aprilia, I expected low-ball offers. Of course got a bunch of tire kickers, but they're usually pretty quick to filter out. I then put the bike up on a few forums, and found a buyer on there. So I was able to sell and avoid eBay.
That said, I have bought and sold on eBay several times and so far, it's been great. On the sell side, there's a fee, but you can usually get more on eBay then on CL and you'll have more visibility on eBay, but again, you pay for that...
Good luck!!

I sold my Maxima on e-bay. I had to list it twice because the first buyer failed to go through with the transaction. This is a PITA because you almost never get the same offer the second time you list it since a lot of people think it is a scam.
I would try Craiglist first, then Autotrader and then e-bay. With CL, just be careful and meet people in a public place or take someone with you.
When I sold my Maxima I had the same concerns about someone coming to my house to pick up the car so I have a buddy of mine with me. He's 6 ft 4 in and 250. No one tends to mess with him.

I agree with the others in to try CL first before eBay. I've never sold a car on CL but lots of other things from furniture to washer/dryers. CL is great.
If the vehicle is special (I was selling a 1988 BMW M6 for my brother) then eBay is a better route since you can get a larger buyer audience.
