anyone got any experience with hearses?

Yeah. I'm thinking about buying a hearse, like a late 70's-mid 80's Caddy
or Lincoln. I think it'd be a unique gear-hauler (music gear, big cabs and amps, keyboards, etc). I could just get a used truck, but that's just boring.
I've done a little reading online and it looks like I could score a decent one for
a good bit less than 10K. Obviously it'll be a gas hog but I don't really care, as it would only get driven on the weekends mostly.
There's the whole goth connotation but that doesn't bother me either. I'm looking at this thing as an amusing alternative to more sensible haulers.
Anyone got any input?
And I've already got an answer ready for the "Hey, you got a dead body back there? Haw haw!" remarks.
I'll just say, "No, but I'm about to."
har har.

We averaged about 11 mpg in a van to San Antonio towing a trailer (from dallas) Sunday night. I bet you would get equal if not better mileage than that + all your gear would be in the same car. I'd say go for it.

this one might be on sale...

j/k

i'd say go for it. i used to want a hearse. but for different reasons. i was planning on turning it into a lowrider. 4 pumps, 12 batteries, 12" dumps...

there are local groups who are strictly into hearses. check them out. other hearse owners will have tons a info for you...

If you're just using it to haul around stuff for your band I'd say that hearses > minivans, pickups, and full size vans.

I think the car aficionado has in his pic may actually have been an ambulance but I can't be sure. Look at the wheelbase on that car. It's almost as long as a crew cab F350 dually.

Why not a Chevy Astro? They can be had for cheap and there is a surprising aftermarket support for it (As opposed to a death mobile). Flat black on wheels would look sweet

Yeah but your hearse is only suited to carrying around deceased midgets.

I've heard hearses have very beefed up suspensions, to carry all the weight.

I don't really feel the hearse. I'd get a used Odyseey. I got mine used from my parents(it's a 00 EX) it's got 150 k on it now. i bought with about 140 k on it. then reselling(if you don't drive it till it pukes) is hell. because other than some goofball high school kid or someone who wants to be different wants a hearse?

Band members and musicians usually want to be different. Even though they may be in their 20's they can still think like high school kids. It's also a cheap way to promote the band. When a hearse bearing the name of the band is parked outside the club people tend to notice.

Funny you posted this, there's someone in Houston who drives a PT done up like a hearse. Gloss black, vinyl top, curtains in the rear windows, chrome grille, bumpers, hubcaps and accents.

I vaguely remember seeing Jesse James or one of those type shows modify a hearse. The back area that carries the casket is reinforced and carries alot of weight. That will kill your fuel consumption.

Just get a cheap van.

bag it, put hydrolics on it, or lower it. give it an awesome paint job. Some nice speakers, TVs etc. No one will notice it's a hearse.

It's funny, up until about yesterday I hadn't thought about getting a hearse until like middle school. Then I was driving home and was thinking about how to haul gear and was like "hey....why not."
I anticipate some weirdo unforseen problems (and vandalism, even) but I know enough mechanics around town to take care of that.
I figure if, after a year or so, it's working out, I'll get to work on mods, maybe even performace stuff, if that's even feasible.
I'd also thought about getting a late-model ambulance.
