5k's a bit steep for me, even though I'd LOVE to attend something like that. It just feels like $5k can go toward something more important .. But if you have the kind of cash lying around, hell yeah go for it.

Just go to an HPDE with a local club like bmwcca or pca. They furnish instructors and its alot less $. You get to "drive" your car. Here is my first time at the track ever 4 years ago media.putfile.com/gtowatkins2 and I have since done probably 50+ days or 25000 miles on the track and now I drive in the same run group as the instructor and I dont think I have spent 5k a year on events.

well, i dont really want to drive my car.........
i've always wanted to be a Formula driver, and F2000 seems like the closest i can get to that.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7JGvIxR0PxA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7JGvIxR0PxA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

but the $5k is definitely going to be tight, i'd really have to pick up slack and work way more hours to even come close to having enough for that.

Umm, have you ever done any kind of high performance driving?

Are you going to pursue a career or a serious hobby in road racing?

If the answer is no, then you're better off attending track days and/or HDPEs.

Take some HPDEs first, Get better skills, learn. Then move up to one of those classes.

i've raced karts, and im pretty good at it.
i'd rather not drive my DD in a HPDE. but 5k is expensive, but this also gets me setup for getting my SCCA licence for driving in f2000 races.....but that means i have to buy a f2000 kart.

I say go for it!! You'll come back a change man. I know a couple of people who did those racing schools, and now they are amazing drivers. Why mod a car when you can learn to drive it?

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got the chance to drive an F2000 (reynard) at the Bridgestone racing academy (they have different cars now) and it was SIIIIIIICK.

It costs a lot, but it was an incredible experience (Our Acura dealer paid for it when we got our TSX). I am going to go back to that place again, or do the Ariel Atom expereince sometime soon if they continue to come up to Ontario. You improve quickly at those things, and I cant even descibe how much fun it was. I was on a high for a week after.

The thing I did had two students chasing an instructor (not allowed to pass each other because it was a short course). The best part was when the guy I was paired with went off track and had to go into the pits. It was just me and the instructor out there,.... I got on his ass to say "LETS GO," and he picked up the pace. Driving as hard/fast as you can at the limit is incredible, and the instructors were great with tips etc.
