Anyone else like the new VW GTI?

I'm liking the new VW GTI. Should I have my head examined? I don't like the seats although I think the rest is great. Looks like some potential under the hood 200 HP six speed 2.0 turbo.

it seems every generation VW is further from where they started, and the charchter they had is what built their reputation. It was the peoples car, but not anymore.

Yes, I will own one soon, hopefully. And the plaid seats are hot, very true to the ol school GTI. A little high priced as usual, but we'll see how much they go for next year.

Do VWs have the same reliability issues that Audis have? And do Audis actually have those problems or is it just a myth that I heard repeated over and over and over again by tons of different people when I was car shopping recently?

VW has a wose track record. My car has 30k miles without any issues but i have heard some horror stories on the audi forums. Hit or miss is my guess.

Bottom line is that there are MUCH more reliable cars out there.

I have two friends with 2001 Wolfsburg Jettas (1.8 turbos). Neither has 50k miles on them yet.

Friend #1: New piston at 28k miles, New turbo at 40k miles, new elec. window modules for all windows at 42k miles

Friend #2: Also needed new pistons around 30k miles, all hoses for the turbo were replaced around that same time. They told him his turbo is working fine again, but he seems to think he needs a new one as well at about 35k miles.

Both are trying to sell their Jettas for Honda/Nissan products and have sworn off VW for life.

That's kind of what I figured - hit or miss with a propensity for missing.

My boyfriend bought his around 38k or something. It was stock except for a BOV.

Needed a new axle and headunit and both were replaced under warranty

I know at least 5 people who have broken their transmission on the PT Turbo boards. I havent. Then again, I dont have an aftermarket WGA either. Yet these people say the tranny sucks.

I think its unfair to compare modded cars vs modded cars in terms of reliability.

I had two stock 2001 VW's owned them from new, one was a GTI GLX VR6 the other was a Jetta 1.8t 5MT - both were piles of dog shit. I see literally hundreds of stock VW's a year and they all have the same problems, its not an isolated problem its wide spread. MAF sensor failures, rear brake calipers, window regulator's, turbo related problems, coil pack failures, O2 sensor problems and constantly throwing misfire codes to the MIL are just a glimpse of how wonderful the mkIV chassis VW's are.

FWIW- I don't think you can put BOV's on 1.8T's they use a diverter valve and its common for VW people to repalce the stock plastic unit with a forged aluminum one. The stock one is prone to failure and a loss of boost, but they don't make the sneezing noise a BOV does.

Agreed it is unfair to compare a modded vs. stock car

My buddy put a BOV on his 1.8T Jetta and it sounded like complete horse shit. Almost sounded like a high-pitched squeek rather than the "sneeze." Needless to say it didn't stay on too long.

I love the new GTI, and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on one. I've struck a deal to get out of my TSX lease 4 months early, with some money in my pocket. Now all I have to do is find the color and package I want. I'm not too concerned about the reliability issues they've had in the past. I just dig this car.

I like it overall........but the black plastic on the rear bumper looks like shit on lighter colors.

And the U.S. spec GTI looks like a minivan with all that wheelgap.

Get the optional 18's, drop it ASAP, light tint (50%) and it will look good.

I'm definitely getting the 18's. As far as the plastic trim on the body, as long as it keeps the stone chips to a minimum, I'm cool with it. Actually, it looks pretty good on the white.

They are horrible, they hate the heat. But the damn styling is just amazing. You cannot not like a VW/Audi body style.

you cant just beat the shit out of audi's without taking care of them. good maintenance is key

also helps to have a good warranty, which audi does have.

I love the front of it, and hate the back of it. Does anyone else think the taillights make it look like a Smart car in some ways?

I do love the last-generation R32 though. It looks absolutely mean in blue.

Not a huge fan of the new style. I owned a 99 GTI VR6 for about 8 months, that was a blast to drive, too bad it got totaled.

I do like that new R32 or is the new one a R36? If they get more reliable I could see myself behind the wheel of a dub again.
