Dont slam on the brakes.

I did this 2 years ago and the truck nailed me, did 5800 in damage to my car and got away without a ticket... (although his insurance paid for it)

why?

Because i was being hot shit and thought if slam on the brakes and he hits me it has to be his fault right?

Wrong.

The officer who took our information and did the report explained it to me as the following.. If he writes him a ticket for tailgating, he has to write me a reckless driving ticket which is a much more serious ticket. It was obvious from the damage to my car and the way he hit me that i just didnt tap my brakes... After talking things out with the officer he agreed to let the insurance companies duke it out and not to ticket either of us. (we both were being jackasses even though HE started it :sqntfawk: :sqntfawk: )

Long story short.. if somebody is tailgating me and i have room to move over, i move over, if i dont have room to move then i simply slow down to the speed limit and pretend like im looking for something in my glovebox

Isn't that wierd? I agree with him, too.

I'm a tailgater myself, and I do it because people won't get the heck out of the way. I'm not sure if they think it's OK to hold up traffic, or because they don't ever look in their rear-view mirror. It happens here all the time. I call it the "Wisconsin road block". People drive the same speed in all lanes. Drives me nuts. Oh, and everyone drives slow here, too. Awesome.

Solution for tailgaters: Just get out of the way.

I second this. It will warrant you the most neutral reaction you can get from the driver who's tailgating you.

Ahhh, sweet justice finally. For all of the people who think they are road police and slow everybody down by not moving out of the left lane, you may now receive a wreckless driving ticket instead of the commendation medal and honorary sgt. stripes you were looking for. In VA, MD, and many other states it does not matter if you are speeding or going 5 mph under, if you refuse to give right of way to faster traffic you can get cited for wreckless

That's pretty cool. I learned on my road trip they are starting new laws in TX as well. 18 wheelers cannot be in the far left lane. Only excuse would be to make a quick pass, but cruising will not happen without a ticket. That's good...It'll save the front end of my car some rock chips from those damn things.

luckily he didnt swerve or nothing, but he was pissed as hell at my buddy. all the time, my g/f and his were laughing thier ass's off in the back seat.

i havent laughed that hard in awhile.

but, none-the-less, he changed lanes and didnt try shit for the rest of the drive home, about 45mins.

i dunno. for the most part, i drive 5-10 over and i couldn't care less about 'em. i'm really laid back and i'd rather be cruising and listening to music than worrying about who's behind me. some tailgater's on me? big deal. i look in my rear view, he sees me looking at him, i pretend he's not even there. the fool then gets too antsy and overtakes me when he gets the chance. always works.

then again, sometimes it's fun just letting my car rip the freeway. especially if they're looking at me in my rear view like i won't do it. cheezy civics, raised pick-ups, chicks with suvs, you name it: if they don't have something nicer or faster than my car, :sqntfawk: 'em. i mean, why stress? let them get pulled over or total their ride.

by the way, pulling up next to or ahead of those idiots even after they've overtaken you is truly a satisfying experience. :P

Be very careful with this approach. While generally the presumption of fault goes to the driver who hits another car from behind, there is legal precedent for charging the driver of the car in front if they deliberately cause an accident in this manner.

Not to say that tapping the brakes isn't effective, but be sure that YOU can get out of their way -- don't depend on them to be able to stop.

(If you're on a multi-lane road, it's better to move over anyway. In a single-lane situation, or when you're in the right lane, just ignore them. Or, if you really want to irritate them -- go even slower. )

You're the epitome of the problems we have on our highways. With that way of thinking all you're showing is you are driving for yourself only. It is completely contrary to the philosophy of responsible, respectful and courteous driving. You are not the one who will help calm down things in a specific situation, you only make it worse this way. Darwin will catch up. :thumbsdn:

I like the brake check method the best. When I had my 4x4 pickup I'd give it a little pedal. With my TSX just enough to give them 3 brakelights in the face. I don't want to wreck my car even if it would serve the dumbass right.

sounds about right, the e-brake does wonders also, nothing like bringing your car to a fast stop with no brake lights.

wow............i apologize. i guess it must be a beach culture thing to not give a shit about drivers who are putting other people in danger just to save a few minutes because they're in such a bloody rush.

first of all, i'm probably one of the most curteous drivers you'll ever meet (see the laid back part if you missed it the first time around). second, i hardly ever drive in the left lanes simply because those are the lanes for people who like to tailgate or weave in and out of lanes cutting others off and end up breaking when they have no where to go. in LA or Orange County, pretty much all the freeways/highways have at least 3 lanes, so if someone can't overtake me, they shouldn't be tailgating in the first place. lastly, it's obvious that drivers get pissed off for being the impatient or anal drivers that they are simply because they think everyone else should give way to them, even though they're annoying the crap out of the person that they're tailgating.

seriously, people need to relax and enjoy their drives for what they're worth. many of us aren't fortunate enough to be driving such nice cars and just because you can drive fast, doesn't always mean you should (e.g. when there's traffic and the average speed is way below the speed of what you want to drive at).

biker, see the 2 replies above your reply. if you still agree, you should live in a place (I suggest a californian beach community if you haven't already) where people don't care for tailgaters and then tell me if you agree with my sentiment. in places like the one where I live, many people drive very expensive, very fast cars, but they still know that tailgating only leads to more frustration on their part because a lot of people (like me) don't get intimidated by that crap.

*sigh* if only all people could live in places like the ones along the california coastline........

I'll take driving in Switzerland over just about anywhere in the world (including CA coast) - where tailgating is not an issue and driving in general is a shear pleasure (if CA had Swiss type drivers then I might change my mind). I almost never have to worry about tailgating - I can get around anyone on my bike and lose anyone trying to tailgate me.
I know of the sentiment you talk about and as I mentioned I follow the rules of the road - when not passing I move over.

The best thing to do is just hit your brakes so your lights come on and they slow down a bit. The you turn on your wipers with the wiper fliud so it sprays off your car and gets on their windshield. You have to be going over 45mph to do this, but it's funny watching the react to this!

i've traveled in a lot of places and it is true, many european/foreign drivers are more curteous than ours, especially in less urban/populated areas. however, i still don't think i should have to move over when there's space to overtake me and i'm going reasonbly fast. it may be the curteous thing to do, but i don't think people should have to tolerate or bend over backwards for tailgaters all the time. it seems most tailgaters don't understand the difference between aggressive driving and dangerous driving.
