Any problems with a 01-02 Accord Automatic?

Hey guys, i'm seriously thinking about a 2001-2002 Honda Accord 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission and was wondering if there were any common major problems with these cars? I've heard a lot of stories about the V6 trannys failing, but I don't know about the 4 bangers tranny.

Can anyone shed some light?

I think the 01 Accord had a 4spd and in all my time here I have not heard of them being "bad" in the way the 5spds have been.

As far as I know there's no issues with the I4's. I'd do a search for "6th gen accord forum" and go to the one that starts with V6. For some reason Acurazine won't let me type it in but they have good info over there for the Accords.

My 99 Accord 4 cyl received its second tranny @ 36k back in 2001. But in general, 4AT issues with the 6G F23A Accords were few and far between.

I had an 01 4 cyl ex. Honda did extend the warranty on the tranny to 100k but I never han any problems up to 67k when I sold it. It now has 100k and the new owner hasn't had any problems either.

I driver a 2001 honda accord coupe EX v4 as my commuter. I am currently clocking 140k on the odometer and she still runs like a champ. She's a pretty reliable car. Hasn't given me any problems yet...

damn f23... a new tranny at 63k?! i'll be looking at accords that have 100k+ miles on them, and thats scary.

quick side question, but are there any good power mods for the F23 aside from FI?
I had a 6th gen 1999 Accord 4cyl EX sedan before the TSX and no real engine problems at all. I had it from 1999 to the end of 2003 and traded it in for the TSX with almost 95,000 miles on it. It only needed a new catalytic converter and a timing belt, but I didn't do either. The new owner of that Accord had to deal with it.

We had one guy on the other forum that I go...his 01 Accord 4-cyl's transmission went out on him too, but he was at 150k or so and they still picked up some of the bill.

one minute dude you like the Accord, now you like the Maxima, but you said you prefer Honda over Nissan. you should just go get a used Infiniti I30 or I35 then if you were going to get a Maxima only because you are an Infiniti guy and the I30/35 are basically luxury Maximas. good luck with the choice

Why not get a stick? Just curious.

There was a period of time when I was looking at 4G Maximas. Specifically the facelifted 97-99 models, SE with stick. I could instantly tell that Maxima is an SE, and it is a very clean example but you can do better price wise.

If you can go easy on the throttle then, the mpg is not all that bad. However, it will never have the mpg of an F23A motor.

As far as mods go, my 99 Accord had the following:
Iceman CAI
DC Sports 4-2-1 header
Apexi WS exhaust
AEM pulleys
Stillen fuel pressure riser
AEM cam gear
Apexi VAFC

These mods definitely made it faster than a stock 6G 4 cylinder and enabled me to give J30A1 Accords a run for the money. But, if I had to do it again, I would have A) bought a 5MT model and B) gone FI.

1. im not flip flopping, i do prefer honda over nissan, but the 97-99 and 00-03 maximas look like a good value if i can find one thats cheap and well maintained.

2. i dont want a stick because i live in the center of LA, will be commuting on the 10 freeway every day which is the worst piece of shit congested thing ever.

3. i will be selling the car in 2-4 years so no major mods, most likely i'll just upgrade the sound system, and maybe a few bolt ons to make the car a bit peppier.

4. i think i'm down to 4th gen Max (97-99), 6th gen accord (01-02) and the 99-00 civics.

The thing I really like about the maxima is that it only weighs 30xx lbs and has a v6 that takes regular.

The accord and civic... well they're accords and civics =D. I bet i'll get great gas mileage and the resale will be higher...

As a former 5.5G Maxima I can say that my favorite Maxima has always been the 95-99 model. Even though Nissan is well into the 6G Maxima's lifecycle, a clean 4G always turns my head. (As an 07 AV6 EX-L owner, I sometimes debate whether or not I should have located and purchased a well maintained 95-99 Maxima SE 5MT instead...but the wife would not go for me offloading my 02 Maxima in favor of a 95-99 model. )

So out of the list set forth, I would go for the 4G Maxima over the rest.
