Also...now that you post them side by side, I see the confusion. I guess it's because I've always wanted a GN that I know the difference when I see one.

I really should be ashamed I'm not proficient in the amazing decade that GM had in the late '70s and '80s.

It was a dark period for all automakers. The Testsrossa was a 14
second car, a well driven base 6mt TL would beat one. The Vette ran mid 16s and got a little quicker as the decade went on. Some of the F-bodies were 17 second cars with 12 second 0-60 times. The naturally aspirated Buick 3.8L made 105-110hp. The identical 4.1made about 125hp. Then this turbo car comes out at a time when there was no such thing as a quick V6 and not only beats the Vette by a mile, it has the quickest 0-60 times in the world for '86 and '87. When you think about a 4.5 second 0-60 it doesn't sound super impressive now but that was done on old hard '80s tires that were only a 215 width back when most performance cars were in the 8-10 second range.

While the older Montes and GNs are both G-bodies and just about every part can be interchanged, the turbo cars shared very few parts other than the frame (and even then the turbo cars had lots more bracing). That reminds me, the GNX had the behind the seat brace and an extra set of body bushings that significantly stiffened it torsionally. I added one and it got rid of so many rattles and made the car feel so much more solid. That's why I tell people not to sweat that we have those braces right behind the rear seats of the TL. In my opinion it's worth not having fold down seats. Some of the suspension was the same but even the rear axle was specific to the turbo cars, no other car got that axle, at least no G bodies and the others that had the 8.5" 10 bolt were trucks that were set up for leaf springs. Even the fuel lines were different. So what I'm trying to say is you could swap part by part out and make the GN a monte but they share very few parts. They look completely different to me and besides the additional 200hp of the GN, they drive so much differently. The GNs have surprisingly little body roll and on modern tires the handling is much better than most think. Not good at all by modern standards but really good for the day. Plus, the other g bodies were carbureted while the GNs were fuel injected. The GNs had much better manners, the engines were smoother and just better to drive. They also lasted longer even though they made triple the hp and got better mpg thanks to fuel injection.

Maybe a better comparison is the Accord to TL. They actually share way more parts than the GN/Monte but we know how differently they look and how differently they drive. The Acura handles better and has a more substantial feel. Now triple the hp of the TL over the Accord and have the factory upgrade everything so it will easily take the power reliably and you have the same difference.
