Smile advise on a cheap 4 banger?

Looking for a cheap little car to save up the milage on my baby TL since i went to school 40 miles away everyday. The budget is around 3 grand. Sedan, SUV, pick up, i dont mind, as long as it's reliable.

had some idea:

-CRX: gonna be fun to drive that little rocket, but it's been so riced out already.

-240 SX or 300ZX: high potential ride with lots of mods space, Anyone know how is the reliability on that thing?

- I have no idea about pick ups but could be helpful since my dad love to do his garden project on weekends. I know Toyota is a better choice if talk about reliability, but How are those Chevy or GMC pick up? For some reason they look a bit better to me.

- Not that much choice on SUVs. I did found some 97 Land Rover with 150K miles, but i heard Land Rover is a when it gets old. Also Honda Passport, didnt see many on the road, how are they?

Sorry about such a broad questions, any feedback will be appriciated

Mazda Protege or Protege5

Inexpensive, relatively good reliability, and a good alternative to the Civic. Otherwise, the Toyota Corolla is a good choice too.

I wouldnt go with a Passport unless you just have to. They are beasts in snow and in mild off road situiations. When things break its hard to find someone that actually knows how to work on them.

Plus, the Passport is really just an Isuzu Rodeo. I always laugh hard to myself when people congratulate themselves for buying a Honda...it's not! Just a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo....

Civic or corolla

Forget about feeling if its just a commuter car. Those things get great MPG, and they last forever. Also if you ever need parts there are tons available and they are mostly cheap

SUV first of all isnt a good choice for a commuter. i dont see why you would want a 240 or 300zx (which isnt even a 4banger, or even a beater car, its a freakin flashy sports car). if your budget is low, wouldnt you want something that wouldnt guzzle gas?

i still would say most practical and reliable for a 40 mile commute everyday would be a civic, corolla, or a sentra. if its not fast enough for you, you can purchse aftermarket parts on those for dirt cheap anyways.

Just a beater: definitely a civic or a Camry. The Camry is unbelievably reliable too.

if you wont a reliable beater....NOTHING OTHER THAN A OLD JAPANESE CAR

your best most practical choice would be the 90-93 honda accord, many acuraziners have owned them. they are pretty luxurious for 15 year old cars, and the styling is still sexy. plus that 30mpg is great.

the other practical choice with a sporty/mod twist would be the 240sx. its also good on gas (untill you drop the sr20det in there

i have owned BOTH these cars, both are awesome. dont listen to this crap about proteges and jettas. get a accord or 240sx trust me.

Someone mentioned Protege5. That's too new to be under $3k.
