Advice on SUV Purchase
Advice on SUV Purchase
Right now I have a 2008 Infiniti G37 that I love. The only problem is that it is too small of a car for what I need to do. The trunk is very small and of course it only has two doors. I hate the thought of getting rid of the Infiniti but I think it just has to happen. I am thinking of getting some type of SUV. I have narrowed it down to three choices. I am considering a certified pre-owned because I know three people that have bought certified before and have had no problems with their cars and have been nothing but happy with them.
The first choice is a 2008 Toyota 4Runner Sport V6. I have always liked the 4Runner and found a certified 2008 listed for $25,000 with only 9,000 miles.
My second choice is a 2008 Acura RDX. I have driven this car before and really like it but I worry about the turbo engine and reliability. I found one of these listed for $26,500 with 8,000 miles.
My final choice is a 2007 Lexus RX350. I also like this car and the one I found was listed for $27,000 with 15,000 miles and loaded with even navigation. The only thing about this one is that it seems to be more of a mommy mobile.
What are the opinions?

What do you "need to do?"
If the answer is off-roading or 4X4, then an SUV makes sense.
Otherwise, why not a sedan with a bigger trunk, a station wagon, etc.?
Look at the following "sporty" options if all you plan on doing is an overland journey to a Piggly Wiggley / Safeway:
Volvo V50 w/T6 turbo (really quick, and the new style is nice)
Audi A4 Avant (or even an RS4)
Audi A6 Avant (an RS6 would be out of your price range)
Dodge Magnum (They are real cheap now, plus you can get a hemi)
Subaru Legacy (AWD, and I pimp the living shit out of the brand. Very reliable and quick)
All of those are better than getting an SUV (OK, the Dodge gets a bum rap but is pretty good at hauling stuff. Dodge had a sense of humor doing a wagon with 340HP).
If you have a significant other that wants to sit higher and feel more in "command" of the road, then just
her...

I graduated college and I bought a house that I am renovating so I recently have had to transport some larger items and a 7 cubic foot trunk just isnt working out too well. I also just got a dog. I know that eveyone might say get a truck but I would rather have an SUV. I live in Key West so there is no off roading thats going to happen. The only wagon styling I like is the Audi A4 but I wont buy another VW/Audi product. Basically, after college I find myself needing something more practical.
From your second post, it seems to me that your need of larger space from a vehicle is just temporary. Do you have any friend who drives truck or SUV? Just borrow it whenever you need it?
But if you have to get SUV, I'd get the Lexus from the list.

From list: Toyota 4Runner.
The other possibility is to get a clunker pick-up rather than trade in the G-- the clunker will cost less than the likely depreciation hit you will take on the G. You can use the S10/Ranger/Mazda/Toyota pickup for carrying materials and keep the G for the rest of your driving. Just a thought.

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to buy a beater to haul my dogs around in so they don't destroy my Audi S4.
For just hauling stuff--get a used truck based SUV for cheap.
I like our RDX for kid-hauling duty--the extra height is nice for stuffing and unstuffing kids in car seats. Cargo is similar to a sedan, but it's shaped differently. Not really a cargo hauler. Pretty fun to drive.

I LOVE my FX, and you still retain that sports car like feel when you get it with the sports package...Not to mention that G exhaust note.
It's not a disconnected, floaty SUV feel like the others you mentioned.
