Accord EX-L V6 vs TSX I4
#41
Once the Camry V6 went to a 2GR-FE motor, the Accord V6 AT became a joke by comparison. IMHO, Honda should have given the AV6 the J35Z6 powertrain from the base TL instead of its current Z2. (Having driven both the TL and 8G AV6, the TL seems -- to me anyway -- much quicker over the AV6 than it's 9hp paper advantage.)

I use to have a Accord V6 and now enjoy driving 4 cylinder cars more. I'll probably never go back to 6 cylinders unless its a BMW inline6.
I would pass on the TSX 4 cylinder, not the best value out there and choose a Accord 4 cylinder, the people at car and driver know their shit.

GTI? Genesis 2.0T? Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and If you can take a small hit on gas mileage the Mazdaspeed3.
Just throwing things out in the price range, this doesn't include the used market, 30k is a big number when looking for used cars.

Well, I did see some used E350s and CTS's in that range as well, they were typically 2009 or 2010 with less than 45k.
You might also be able to get into one of the new turbo regal, they start at like 29,700. Just tossing some ideas, test driving is where the decisions are made.

I think that Honda has forgotten that the Accord is Honda's bread and butter. They cut corners with the accord because they don't want the accord coming to close to the TL and TSX. They have made that mistake for years. The TSX is a great car but Honda should have made the accord more like it in the states since the TSX is the accord in many other countries around the world.

My advice is to stay away from any Honda V6 with VCM. I ditched my '09 Accord EX-L V6 after only four months because it drove me nuts on the highways around Houston.

The highways around Houston are constantly changing grade ... up an overpass and down the other side. The VCM would deactivate cylinders on the downside and then kick them back in on the incline ... over and over again. The cylinder deactivation/activation is not as seamless as they claim.

anyways, I'm a big fan of the Optima. If you don't mind brand image, it's really hard to pass up on. Fully loaded with more tech, power, and turbo engine for right around 30K...Hmmm

Anyone driving 100mile per day. I will stayaway from Turbos/V6 type cars. Not only they have less fuel economy but will have higher maintainance (timing belt) and those Korean cars cannot drive in straight line. they will need tire sooner and are not that much refined.
#64
My husband test drove both the 2012 Hyundai Sonata turbo and the hybrid. He was very impressed with the turbo which drove very straight. It has a timing chain. The battery in the hybrid takes up a lot of the trunk space along with the regular battery which is also in the trunk.

I'd take a V6 over a 4 cyl and I commute that much daily. The 4 cylinders I've driven are too rough for my tastes.
#66
I'll toss in a nod for the Kia Optima 2.0T as well. If you don't like the design as much, the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T is pretty much the same thing.
I would also suggest a Nissan Altima V6- the car seems to be nearing the end of its life-cycle and dealers look like they want to move these things. My parents have a 4-cylinder Altima and it's been a great car over the past 3, almost 4, years.

The Accords v6 is not real 3 lobe cam vtec. It's i-vtec because of the cylinder deactivation. The only accord v6 with vtec is the 6spd. The accord v6 lack low-end tq too. If the accord had true vtec its 271hp engine would pull as fast as 3rd gen tl auto 0-60 6.8sec instead of it doing it in 7.5sec. The TSX auto does 0-60 in 8sec range so id say tsx plus you get vga navi, surround sound audio, xm traffic, hids in projector optics and just a firmer ride.

I'm looking for a car that I can put about 100 miles a day on. The Accord EX-L V6 and base TSX are similarly priced. Accord V6 offers 30MPG highway while TSX I4 is rated at 31MPG. Accord V6 calls for regular gas while Acura recommends premium to achieve max power and fuel efficiency. On paper it looks to me like Accord would have more power and run cheaper since it calls for regular gas instead of premium.
Has anyone cross shopped these two cars? What's your opinion? Is there anything else around $30k that can get at least 30MPG that I should be looking at? I would keep this car a long time so reliability is a must.

Let's say you get the advertised gas mileage between the two: 30 for the Accord (V6 BTW) and 31 for the TSX. If you go 100 miles a day, that translates to:
Accord: 100 miles/day X 1 gal/30 miles X $3.30/gal = $11 a day = $4,015 in gas for the year (on average).
TSX: 100 miles/day X 1 gal/31 miles X $3.60/gal (premium) = $11.61 a day = $4,239
Add in the cheaper maintenance and I'd say go with the Accord.

I bought a car! The last time I bought a car for myself was 1997.
Since I'm going to be putting over 100 miles a day on this thing I decided to see if I could live with a normally aspirated 4cyl and it turns out that I can. I purchased a 2012 4cyl Camry SE. I went with Magnetic Grey Metallic paint with black interior.
I went with the Camry over the others for a few reasons. I'm mainly going to point this car in a straight line and cruise. The Camry is great at that. It's quiet and handles the bumps well. The suspension on the SE is a little bit stiffer than the standard Camry and it's satisfactory for the kind of driving that I will be doing. The main reason I scratched the Accord is that they don't offer integrated Bluetooth until you step up to the EX-L.
The Toyota dealer was eager to sell. No problem getting a Camry at or below invoice. I was a bit surprised at that considering that 2012 was the Camry refresh. Hyundai must really be eating into their sales.
I'll post some pics when I have a chance.
