About shaving competition tires...

Most of the competition tires I see advertised suggest that they must be shaved for use on dry pavement.

For instance, here's a quote from tire rack "The ECSTA V700 is molded with 6/32" of tread depth in its two major circumferential grooves". Yet they go on to say that it "must be shaved to 3/32" - 4/32" tread depth for any autocross or track use in the dry"

They are saying that you HAVE to remove 1/16th- 3/32nd of an inch?

To me, that doesn’t seem like a whole lot of difference...or is it? Will that extra sixteenth of an inch cause the tire to chunk apart? Is it a difference that would only be appreciated by a seasoned driver?

Get Falken Azenis.

Affordable, awesome, grippy, stiff as hell sidewall. Get a sprayer with water and inbetween runs cool them down. I've had mine for week now, and I still can't get over how much they have changed the handling of my otherwise stock car.

You're running these as your daily driving tires?? Damn, won't they wear out really fast?

So be it...

Treadware is 200 A A

Wont get 40K out of them, but I'm hoping for 10-15K depends on how much autoXing i end up doing.

Not in a financial position to buy seperate rims and tires for autoXing.

I can't really afford it either, but I was wondering if it might be cheaper in the long run to suck up the cost of new rims just for the auto-X. Ultimately save some $ by not buying new falkens every 10k? Then again, if you like how much they make your car handle as a daily driver, makes sense to keep them on 24/7.

Thats how im looking at it right now, but if i had the cash (and the storage) I would have seperate rims (lightweight 17") with tires strictly for AutoX.

now that I have dedicated snow tires, I just might be tempted to go this route. There's even a Falken dealer in my town....
