98 Prelude - Trouble Starting in the Cold

i've had the car just about a year now. i've had zero reliability issues with the car since day one.

this weekend started the first we've seen of "freezing" cold weather.

and both mornings i've gotten up to go into work, my car has a real tough time getting started.

it turns over fine and the power from the battery is strong...

it feels as if im not getting any fuel.. it just turns over. after multiple tries it starts to sputter a bit.. and after numerous tries, i can get it to grab if i give it a little gas.

anybody have any ideas of what the culprit could be without me taking it to a shop.

if more information is needed just let me know.

thanks in advance.

I would assume there are coil packs? I know some toyotas have three coil packs and three wires instead of all coil packs.

I don't know if it could be a cold start sensor. I can't remember if the car has a hard time starting when it goes or if it runs rough until it warms up.

once it is started, it runs fine.

and of course, every crank from that point on in the day is fine.

its just the initial morning start, after sitting in cold weather all night.

Could be a number of things.

When you mention the battery is strong, what are you comparing it to. A battery often becomes weaker as the temperature drops. It may also be a bad sensor, allowing the mixture to be incorrect.

Try this: Turn the key to the "on" position for 5-6 seconds. Allow the fuel system to pressurize. Gasoline vapourizes far less easily when very cold, and it's these vapours that allow ignition in the cylinders. A fully pressurized may help in this regard. Also, some, but not all, fuel injected cars allow more air to be brought into the cylinders if the accelerator pedal is partially depressed. If your car is one of them, this allows additional air to be drawn into the combustion chambers. If your engine is cranking slowly, this can be of benefit when starting the car. Once the engine starts then slowly release the accelerator.

^^ yea, pressing the gas pedal eventually is what gets it to start... i'll start leaving the key in the ON position a bit longer to see if it helps..

with all the stuff im working on at the moment, this is the last thing i need
