5 cars to Avoid in 2005, due to prices

Best and worst car buys as model year changes
By Terry Jackson • Bankrate.com

Five '05 cars to avoid -- for now
Ford Mustang
Ford dealers will have customers lined up 10 deep to get a look at the all-new Mustang, which has been restyled to resemble a modern version of the 1967-68 Mustang. The car looks fabulous and even with the V6 packs a lot of power. Wait six months until the frenzy dies down and the Mustang should be a good buy.

Chevrolet Corvette
Only the sixth all-new Corvette in more than 50 years, this one promises 400 horsepower and interior refinements that will make it more competitive with the likes of Porsche but at thousands less. A convertible will be along midyear and then later a Z06 model with as much as 500 horsepower. Just don't expect to buy a new Vette at anything under sticker for at least the first year.

Hybrids
The gasoline-electric vehicles are coming into their own. Ford's hybrid Escape will join Toyota's Prius and Honda's hybrid Civic, followed by the hybrid version of the Lexus RX, called the 400h. These are remarkable vehicles and they're in demand. But there's a waiting list at some dealerships for the Prius, and Ford will only build 20,000 hybrid Escapes. So wait a year before going green, unless you've got a lot of green to spend.

Dodge Magnum/Chrysler 300
When rap stars and football players start showing up in vehicles, you can count on mere mortals having to pay top dollar to join the fun. That's the case with these two stylish new Chryslers that perhaps foretell the company's long-term revival. Just wait about four more months until P Diddy and his crew get theirs.

Mercedes-Benz CLS
There are few classier designs than the Mercedes CL, and for 2005 Mercedes is slotting the sleek four-door CLS between the E Class and S Class sedans. If you're shopping in the over-$50K market, this is one to check out. But even in that price range, waiting perhaps a year could mean saving a few thousand dollars.

Yep, the 05 Mustangs will be going for (at least) sticker, but wait a year (or two), and some will even be popping up on the used market at a decent price.

The Vette is another story. Some people actually prefer the C5's looks to the C6. With the agressive discounting of the C5 (7-12 off MSRP), C5 values will plummet and the C5 will be a great bang for the buck used. Of course the straight ballers will be paying a premium to be the first on their block to own a C6.

if you are smart, you should not have a problem finding ANY of these cars at sticker. I've already seen 2 C6's local that guys have gotten for sticker and had a dealer willing to sell me their next magnum R/T comming in at sticker. Unfortunately most people are idiots and will pay a premium

4.9K over sticker for a Legacy GT is such a ripoff.

Edmund's TMV listing a GT Limited at about 1500 less than MSRP! You can BUY one from CarsDirect for 28k + Dest + TTL.

As long as you stick to your price, you're in the drivers seat in negociations. Most salespersons make a point of getting your phone # and other info in case you walk out.

I had a honda guy trying to sell me accords for months after I bought my CLS. Seemed like the calls always came at the end of the month (with better and better prices). He finally called with about a Red 03 Accord V6 Ex 6spd coupe (which was selling for above sticker when it first came out), so I finally returned his calls an told him I bought a CLS 6spd. He never left a message for me on my machine again

Don't get me wrong, the dealer will try to get a markup out of you, and 80% of the people will be to stupid not to realize they are getting scammed. It's like 90% of the country is paying markups on the new lambo G but there are still a good amount of smart buyers out there paying sticker.

Paying above MSRP is becomming very hard, esp. w/ the recent introduction and huge boom of online sales most dealers are attacking. My aunt works at a chevy dealership, their internet team consists of 2 guys who sell about 150 cars a month, pretty much matching what the rest of the dealership does. A few months back she said they sold almost 100 cars in one week

Now it's a matter of finding all the options you want, what you want to pay, and sending an email out to a few dealerships, one of them WILL take your offer.

i just had a lenghty convo with a ferrari owner about this same subject. he was saying that with ferrari the resale value raises as soon as you drive off the lot becuase of market value. see the dealer cant mark up the car becuase its selling well. ferrari will drop them from aporved dealers for doing such things. so they keep there sales people in check over it. i found this quite intersting seeing as how with normal cars as soon as you drive off the lot the value drops. just thought i would share that.

Yep, it's like that w/ a few different high luxury cars. As you mentioned ferrari won't allow "new" cars to be sold at MSRP. So dealers will make the new buyer sign a contract giving them first bid at buying the car back. Some will even sell the car to friends to drive for 1,000 miles or so then get them back and add 50K to them.

I heard with Ferraris that you have to agree to Ferrari not to sell your car for X amount of years so as not to use the car as an investment. I think it was being fought though.

I remember when S2k's first came out with $10k mark up.
