4Hi & 4LO differences

Guys,

Anyone know what the differences are between the 4Hi & 4Lo drives?
When do you have to use each one?

Someone explain it to me.

thanks in advance
John

4 low/high is referring to the torque... for really sticky situations where you are going to be going very slow you would want 4 LOW. but you cant go over probably about 30 w/ 4 LOW

4 HIGH would be for example if you were in need of all four wheels but not in such a bad situation.. maybe if you were driving through snow or heavy rainfall... but still going faster like on the highway or such.

^^^^ wrong.

4lo is only to be used at speeds below 15MPH, and when you need to go straight, but not make turns.

are you talking 4x4?

i belive 4 lo the rear differential is usually locked, that that is why you have to go slow since the differential is locked it cant compensate for the outer wheel traveling further than the inner wheel in turns.

i change my statement:

4 lo is just gearing, 4 hi doesnt change the gear ratios whereas 4 lo does....

It does wonders for engine braking when you can have 10mph be 5k RPM in first.

Clorich said it with pictures. 4Lo gives you way more torque at low speeds to get you out of mud and up steep inclines, and engine breaking for down steep hills. 4Hi is just regular 4WD with the same gear ratios for driving on the road. You should never use 4Lo on the road unless you're stuck in a snow drift or something, or pulling someone out of the ditch with your truck.

It's okay. I wouldn't worry. People don't say shit like that to me face to face because I look tough and don't back down. A solid punch to the sternum usually shuts them up.
