Good post but something kind of scares me about some of the info

Mazda number one and FORD number 2 That right there makes me doubt the validity of this study. Plus it did not seem to be broken down by model which is more important to me than manufacturer overall.

Plus this is a UK study. I would say the conditions we face in the US are somewhat different (more roads, different temps) etc.

Ford's overseas are better built and much more reliable then the ones built here and in Mexico. Also they go by warranty claims collected by an independent warranty company that is much more accurate then owner feedback by mail like Consumer Reports.

True the conditions over there are different, but US has MUCH better roads then Europe. Most of the roads over there are down right harsh, with lots of potholes, dips, uneven surfaces etc.

So could we not say the reverse is true that mazdas shipped to the US are of poorer build quality?

Still the links don't get me to my issue of model vs car manufacturer. Mazda could make great 3's, great millenias, and crappy as hell 6's but since they sell so many of the others they would get a good rating in that system.

Looking deeper into it it looks like the study is only based on warranties claims as supplied by Warranty Direct (direct to consumer warranties, additional coverage for consumers). Seems like most people would not take part in that system to me so again doesn't seem like a good sampling of the public.

Interesting reads but not sure how relevant it is to US reliabilty issues.

You could say that, but most of the Mazda's here in the US are very reliable that come from Japan. The ones built in the US are not so reliable as the ones from Japan but they aren’t that bad either.

They do give a break down of each model. They can be found here: http://www.reliabilityindex.co.uk/to...28339010848601

BTW Honda is ahead of Ford as of now.

You have a good point not everyone will use their extended warranty coverage so they might not get a clear reliability record of the different car manufactures as a whole. But then again you could say the same thing about Consumer Reports and JD Power studies. Not everyone will participate in those surveys that they send in the mail.

Their reliability probably isn't 100% relevant to the US but it gives you an idea, plus the MPS6 will be built in Japan rather then the US like the regular Mazda6. So that right there should be a least a little more comforting, well to me at least.

^^^^ funny we are going back and forth but I am totally going to be looking at this car next year for a purchase.

Parents had an old mx6 that was like a rock so my personal experience is but I have been a little scared about the rusting issue with the mazda6.

Either way this car looks great, not too ricey (ala STI/EVO) but not too mundane (ala legacy) Can't wait to take it for a spin

It's not as fast as the EVO or the STi, but sure looks nice than either of the 2.

I'm thinking this means Volvo might be releasing a S40 R version soon. It definately looks great, and hopefully it will be out sooner than later.
