2010 Jeep SRT-8... Opinions?

So I've been looking at new cars/SUVs lately and one SUV that I keep coming back to is the SRT-8 Jeep. Anybody have any experience with Jeeps or Dodge/Chrysler SRTs? I've come up with what I think are some Pros and Cons for the car in general and specifically for the one I'm looking at:

Pros:

-420HP Hemi V8
-AWD
-Front/Rear BBK
-LOVE everything about it looks wise
-Fully Loaded
-Color combo I want (Silver/Black)
-Certified to 100,000 or 2017 (Only has 9,xxx on it now)

Cons:

-12/16 MPG
-Listed at $43K, should definitely be able to get it for less.
-Reliability? I don't really know much about Jeep reliability; the car is certified to 100,000 but that still doesn't mean I want to be in the shop every other week.

So other than the horrible gas mileage and the price tag (which should come down), is there any cons I'm missing? What's your overall opinion of it?

This is the one I'm looking at...

The only con i can think of is you'd be driving around a suv that runs 13's.

They are very nice IMO and I have looked into them as well.. although I can't get over the gas MPG. I've been down that road with my last vehicle.. expect less than the "12/16 MPG," according to some posts I've read on Jeep forums

just remember A. The price of insurance on that and B. the cost of gas when that SRT8 is guzzling fuel when gas prices reaches it's high's again.

Not a bad car at all, but like everyone said, MPG is going to be horrible. If you drive like a granny, than it will be in the 11-14 ranged and if you drive like a teenager, than it will be in the 6-10 range.

Why are you buying?

I'm curious because you're 24 with a Type-S and STR8 Jeep?! Why do you need both

Not to burst your bubble, but the Jeeps are among the worst vehicles as far as reliability goes. At least you'll have a good warranty. A friend of mine bought a Wrangler in '07 and it was in the shop for six months total for overheating and cylinder head issues. Maybe the hemi won't be so bad.

Basically, if you feel like your funds are sufficient, I would do it. But you have to know for sure. Can you afford payments on the car (if you go that way) and the extra gas. Seems like you will fill up every 6 days once you start driving regularly.

You can buy much better cars for $44K, new ones at that. And ones that'll get more than 10MPG. As someone else said, insurance will be pricey also. There are just much more practical and better cars available for that price. I say f to the no. Not to mention that body design is done now.

Buy a used M3 if you want speed. New G37 or TL SH-AWD if you want just a nice car with some performance.

Or that hes driving a car from a company that almost put itself in a grave and we had to bail out.

Since the Grand Cherokee has been redesigned for 2011, I would wait to see if a new SRT8 is in the works.

If you are set on getting the 2010, it's a hot suv but I've never been a fan of the interior.

YOu can get a nice low miles used 08-09 for around 30g if you look hard enough and are patient. Ive seen it done.

Frankly, they are beasts. And they are very reliable. The 6.1 engine is bullet proof.

And yes there will be a new Jeep SRT I believe for 2012 with the new 6.4L which is even more of a beast.

BADASS Jeep. I've heard there is a new one coming out too so as much as it sucks to buy a car and have a new model come out right after, prices will prolly drop...

Here is an option (maybe). Wait for the new SRT 8 and lease it. I think that is the best way to go with a vehicle that is as impractical as the GC SRT8, but goo gobs of fun to drive.

i would NEVER consider getting a 2010 jeep (new) after what the 2011 looks like, regardless of the slew of negative comments already mentioned. what are you smoking?

GT-R for $44k?? you tell me where I can find it at that price.... I will buy one right now.

back to topic, I actually thought about this few nights ago. I think Jeep is one of the brand that style fades away fast, IMO. I think Srt-8 is a beast but would rather use that money on different car.

I must be smoking crack, because although it looks more refined imo it's lost even more character.

I wouldnt consider anything but a wrangler, but mainly as a toy not a DD. The only SRT8 I've seen around here is owned by a complete douche bag rich kid that drives it like the complete asshole that he is.

Yeah I've thought about both of those factors. My insurance is already thru the roof so i'm fine with that; the gas guzzling factor I can't get over tho... Maybe I can find a good condition older Accord or Civic for a DD

Noo I will be trading the TL-S in on it. It's paid off so I should have a nice chunk to put down on the SRT.

I'm already filling up every 7 with the TL!

You have no idea how long I've been looking for a CPO IS-F around me, can't find one.

Probably on his lot.

IMO I'd keep the TL and enjoy not having car payments for a while. Unless you really really really need the extra space/towing capacity, I wouldn't buy it. Don't particularly see the point of the SRT-8 Jeep. It's a great car to build for fun, but I can't imagine it being a practical DD. 425 horse SUV that's been lowered, and I don't know how towing would work with that central exhaust.

It would be a great second or third car, horrible DD IMO. Save your $$$.

I'm retracting my statement, and moving to this. You are even better off getting a new fully loaded NISMO 370Z. Or find something used. Unless you really need the extra cargo space in the trunk.

I had one for just over a year and loved it. I never once got 16 MPG-the best I ever saw was just under 15. During normal everyday driving, I saw around 12-13. It is not a cheap vehicle to maintain though. Every 15k miles, you have to flush the diffs (expect a couple of hundred dollars there). The brakes need to be replaced every 25-30k miles (almost $2k if you let the stealership do it, around $800 if you do it yourself with aftermarket parts). The stock tires wont last more then 25k miles (they're crap anyways though, so replace them soon if not done already).

Other then that, I really didn't have many problems at all. For the amount of times I brake-torqued it at a light, everything felt just as good at 30k miles as it did at 5k miles when I bought mine.

As for practicality though, it is probably a bit worse then your current TL. The rear seats are tight-don't expect to get 3 adults in the back if you like them. The truck doesn't tow anything (yes it's rated for 3500 lbs, but the hitch looks horrible when installed).

With all of that said, I would own another one-I'm just waiting for the new one

This was the point I was going to make, cost of ownership is the con for me besides the gas thing. When you're looking at a car like this IMO fuel economy is out the window but it's not like u can expect anything reasonable with that kind of engine/performance. However maintenance on it is high. Have you seen the brakes on that thing!!!? LOL

I am a former Jeep SRT8 owner, I loved it nobody could touch me. Obviously the MPG wasn't good but you know that going into it. I drive fast mostly b/c I couldn't help it and I never saw below 13mpg. I even took it to Road America in Elkart Lake WI and averaged 10mpg. Insurance was actually cheaper than my 09 TSX, that would depend on your age and driving record. Tires can be costly but ditch the run flat goodyears. Overall a great car, can haul 5 people and faster than most things on the road.
