Alright, so finally got back in town (been traveling for a few weeks) and have been driving the car regularly. Very happy, there are a few things that need fixing...specifically the charcoal canister needs to be replaced. Will fill up about 1/4 tank then you have to sit every 4 seconds and refill till it finally fills up half an hour later.
Trying to decide my level of laziness and whether to DIY or pay someone.
Also need to get it looked at overall and do 100K service.

Polished it today. This thing is big. Ignore the unmatched rim, just ordered a whole new set on eBay I'll be powder coating black or dark grey. Should be here next week then another few days to get coated.

Btw, have had two incidents in it already. Wife had a shopping
Cart fly into the fender on day two (repair guy got most out). Then some dickheads door dinged both front doors. One polished out. The other left a little crease.

IMO, they never should have gone away from this design. It's timeless, classy, powerful, and understated. I've always wanted an E38 sport SWB but I can't ever bring myself to deal with the inherent work that comes with them.

I'm curious as well. From following the E36 and E39, I don't think those generations of BMWs hold up all that well. It's not that they require abnormal maintenance for a German car but that stuff deteriorates that might not on a Honda and people are driving these things like they're an Accord. That said, it's not universal. If you're patient you can probably find a well-maintained 7-series.

The V8 engines in those generations of BMWs tend to have more issues than the I6 motors. The issues are mostly dealing with the cooling system (typical for every BMW). They are also prone to the usual suspension components wearing out, engine accessories/sensors going out, interior parts (gauge panel display in particular) going out, and electronic gremlins. The downside is that they are harder to fix because the engine takes up a ton of space and parts are expensive. Nothing is impossible to DIY but it's not as easy as a 330 or 530 motor.

That's exactly what I've seen. I love the E39 540i Sport 6MT but once I saw how much work would be involved to modernize all the parts that wear out under the hood that most people don't/won't replace I had to pass.
