2002 E55 Amg

What do you guys think about the previous generation E55's. Would you trade it in for a 2005 TL and pay some extra money or no. I've always loved this car, its just a classy and sporty at the same time sedan imo. What are your ?

I think it looks outdated. I would keep the TL and save the extra cash.

The M5 from those years is a much better choice.

yeah not a big fan of the older E classes to begin with. it looks too dated and played out because of all those other E classes all over the place.

i think the previous gen 5-series/M5 had much better and classier lines that'll never really look old. i love the looks of older bmw's because they can never really look dated.. although the bangled bmw's will never really own up to what bmw designs used to be. just my opinion. i think its because of all that controversy and love or hate looks when it first debuted.

Yeah now that I really think of it I agree with you guys. Comparing the M5 and E55 from lets say 2001...there is a huge difference. The M5 definitely looks much nicer and sportier. How reliable were those cars, I hardly ever see one on the road.

well the M5 is more reliable than the E55 amg. but then again both do have shares of problems.. i think youre still better off with the M5 though.

I had a 01 E55 for a short time. Boss's car I had for a summer. It was an ok car. It didn't seem that fast, & didn't notice a big deal in handling either.
It was the car I got my 1st speeding ticket in doing 107 in a 70, but was doing upwards of 120 before I got tagged. Straight HW from Orlando to Miami.
$400 ticket

0-60 in 5 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.6, I would call that fast, in particular for a sedan in 2001

the same year M5 was 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.2.... Having driven both I would lean towards the M5, have you conisidered the same period CLK55? Its no faster, but I like the styling a lot more.

Grandpa has a 2001 E430 with 46k miles on it, never had a problem with it, I actually like the way they look a lot just so classy imo. The ride and feel of that car is like nothing I have ever driven. He has a 06 GS430 and I much more like the E430 more along with my uncle, he feels the same way. The TL doesnt even compare. well mine didnt, it was an 02 TL-S Have not driven a 3g cept for like 2 min so I cant say there but I would love to have one of those cars. personally a CLK just for the 2 door but ill say go for it!!

I guess this thread should be renamed M5 or E55.

Well my buddy has an M5 and he already has repairs totalling almost $10K (still below 50K miles), which included a new clutch, tires ($800), driveshaft, differential and a few other things.

But he pretty much drives the car like a maniac whenever he gets a chance. Thank god for the warranty. That doesn't mean that the car is unreliable, I'm sure every car would keep breaking if you kept pushing it 24/7.

I love the look of the E39s. The E60s will never look as classy.

I have never driven the E39 but would still consider trading into a 540i (or M5 if the price were right). As hot as the new E60 looks (my opinion), the E39 stands out equally in its road presence.

I came across a W210 E55 at a local Lexus dealership and while the performance is pretty impressive, the W210 (even in E55 AMG guise) just looks way to plain for my tastes. The style of the W211 is so much nicer....inside and out!!

I wonder whats more reliable.

E39 M5, E46 M3, or 7 series.

Irony: I was at Etown yesterday and watched an E39 M5 run against an E46 M3 (13.2 @ 107mph vs 13.7 @ 100 mph)

Complete speculation here... but I'm thinking it would go...

E39 M5
E46 M3
7-series

Based on what I've read from owner feedback. I know that FastAcura posted some problems with the E39 M5, but from what I've heard and been told, the E39 5 series is one of BMW's most reliable lines...

The W210 E55 (354hp/390 lb-ft) is noteably quicker/faster than the W211 E500 (302hp/339 lb-ft), although the new W211 E550 (382hp/391 lb-ft) could probably outrun the W210 E55 .

That said, I would get the slower (but MUCH better looking) W211 E500.

Sidenote: Just saw an E60 M5 in Princeton last night....that is two in one weekend.

There's a professor at school that has a blue E60. First one I ever saw, AND he had an E46 too, before he got the new one. Its nice to see it every Wednesday night. I wonder if ill keep seeing in the winter. I was at my parents house, and sitting at the one traffic light in town was a E60 going one way, and another going the other. Definatly something you don't see every day.

Pushing a TL =/= as pushing an M5. Just think about the wear and tear on a big sedan with that much power.
