List averaging around $3k. It's RWD with a 4.6L engine and they don't look that bad for an older car. Do you want it just to drive or make into a somewhat sleeper?

If I were looking at a car, I'd want a bunch more information than that.

It's just gonna be an extra car I guess. RWD are fun to drive, but I doubt this car will handle well. What do you think?

That's a decent price for a functioning car. I assume the car has been in Oregon most of its life and is rust-free.
Bring a mechanic with you, pay him to look at it, save some money in the long run.

OP, I owned a XR7 V8 and the 4.6 is solid. I can't say the same for the tranny but still holds up pretty well. The suspension on the car is garbage as its heavy as shit and ends up making noise and I really mean everything will start making noise! A/C is shitty and will go out on these cars not sure why... maybe its the cheaply made compressor? Other then those things its a solid car? lol
Oh remember its a 200hp V8 tank so don't expect it to fly and also it has 105-110mph cutoff limiter...

If it's a functional car and has been reasonably maintained, for $1500, why not? Just remember some things wear/age regardless of use. Belts, hoses, tires as examples.

I just scrolled through 400+ ads on the Salem CL and I would say that anything that is RWD looks like Badger from Breaking Bad is selling it.
If it were me, I would look at something decent to drive and not be afraid of Japanese cars with miles on them.

There are a couple of 90s Preludes that are options too.
That Cougar has low miles but you should consider the age of the car rather than the miles. I bought an '89 Skylark in 1995 and by 1997 it had blown a head gasket, then later caught fire and burnt to the ground. Bought it with 32k miles on it. Car was not very good.
Again, if it were me, I'd be looking for the best car in my budget that was going to be fairly reliable.
Though you have your pick of shitbox Mustangs and Camaros but you'd just be setting your money on fire IMO.

While working part time as Hertz vehicle transporter back in the mid-90s, we drove the heck out the V8 Birds and Cougars. Although they couldn't handle for anything, they were a blast to drive.
I would go through with the purchase just for shits and giggles.

I agree with CM. For that price, you can probably find a FWD car that's more fun to drive. You can have fun with a mid-90's Civic hatchback. Not the most creative choice, but definitely not the worst, and I'm sure $2k could buy you a good example.

Civic hatchbacks go for a lot more than that in Oregon. Older cars tend to be better preserved here thanks to a lack of salt on the roads and milder weather.

I drove a 96 V8 thunderbird for a few years. Items to lookout for would be transmission and intake manifold. The intake manifold has a plastic crossover highly prone to cracking and the transmissions aren't the strongest.
Easy fixes though, if you know what you are doing.

91 civic.
I drove that thing for a while when i was 16 or 17.
Slow as fuck but a really fun car!
It will out handle almost any heavy V8 from that era.
