13.127@106.64 First Time Out…

This is with my 2001.5 6MT S4. Currently the only mod is the GIAC X chip and I was running 5 gallons of VP103 race fuel. But that is it for mods and completely surprised me as I was expecting mid to high 13’s at about 101 – 103 MPH.

This was at Atlanta Dragway which sits at about 1200’. It was about 50 degrees out with unusually low humidity for this region at about 45% with a baro of about 30.19 inHg.

I couldn’t get the launch right though. On the first run of the day I launched with too much RPM which resulted in the clutch slipping bad. Even when I prematurely grabbed 2nd it continued to slip to where I had to back off the throttle and then back on it to get it to hold. This resulted in the following:

60’ 2.117
330’ 6.265
1/8 9.398
MPH 79.61
1000’ 12.025
¼ 14.244
MPH 101.52

The next run I bogged the launch but the clutch held but I hit the rev limiter in 1st and shifted at the wrong points resulting in the following:

60’ 2.109
330’ 5.866
1/8 8.911
MPH 82.28
1000’ 11.487
¼ 13.663
MPH 103.77

On the 3rd run I hit the launch a little worse and still bogged. However, I nailed all of the shifts perfectly which resulted in this:

60’ 21.78
330’ 5.878
1/8 8.850
MPH 83.85
1000’ 11.391
¼ 13.541
MPH 104.85

The 4th run was the best of the day and I don’t think I could have improved upon it. I had what felt like a perfect launched, nailed the shifts where I had determined they should be (more on that in a moment) and held it through to the end. I know others have cut better short times but I don’t know if it could be improved. Any more revs and the clutch would be slipping. But then again, I have never been an expert at launching. Had I pulled down a 1.7 – 1.8, 12’s may have been realized.

60’ 1.977
330’ 5.594
1/8 8.510
MPH 85.40
1000’ 11.016
¼ 13.127
MPH 106.64

Personal Best Timeslip

I had several more runs all in the mid 13’s in the 104 – 105 range. I was trying not to slip the clutch and ended up bogging it every time. It started getting warmer and crowded as this was opening day. I’m glad I got there early as there were many trailers at the gate waiting to get in and only a dozen or so cars at that time. Once through the gate while the trailers were unloading I got through tech quickly and purchased fuel. I was then able to get seven passes within an hour and this included one time watching from the side while the car cooled (which didn’t help).

As mentioned, I was actually expecting mid to high 13’s at about 101 – 103. I knew the 13.1 pull was good but was shocked when I saw the slip. I knew my car was strong but not that strong. The conditions were definitely favorable and the fuel certainly helped..

One possibly contributing factor is the shift points used. I would never suggest any do what I did as mods may be different but it isn’t unusual after reading some in the archives. Last night I studied my dyno plot (below) and used the gear ratios and calculated out the optimal shift points for my car as it sits right now. When the DPs and exhaust go on I am sure they will change and be a little higher. What I calculated was the following:

1 – 2 7000
2 – 3 6500
3 – 4 6200

What I did was started executing the shifts as follows to give some room as the feet and hands started making the moves:

1 – 2 ~ 6700
2 – 3 ~ 6300
3 – 4 ~ 6000

My car made 248 WHP and 301 WTQ. Dyno Plot

Overall I am pleased with the results and am looking forward to trying it out when I PnP the manifold and add the DPs and exhaust. With the same conditions and a good launch 12’s are definitely in the picture

Impressive. On of my favorite cars of all time
Good use of correlating shift points with dyno graph also! That's what we were taught in my gound vehicle dynamics class back in college. Whatever yields the most area under the curve essentially...

The S4's gearing is interesting, 1st is very short but there is a big difference when going to 2nd.

2nd is 85% taller than 1st which means I would need at least 85% more TQ at the dropping to RPM to make it effective. Needless to say, that wasn't available. However, 3rd is only 53% taller than 2nd. But the big one is 4th, it is only 27% taller making an early shift with that great mid range torque a requirement.

The gear ratios are as follows:

1st 3.500:1
2nd 1.889:1
3rd 1.231:1
4th 0.967:1
5th 0.806:1
6th 0.684:1
Reverse 3.455:1
Final Drive 4.111:1

Yet you never made it out in the CL beast

Great times Steve. I was playing with what I assume was a stock bi-turbo S4 on my way back from Smitty's last weekend when I picked up the IC. He really couldn't keep up with me at all, even at 120 MPH pulls.

But then again I'm assuming he wasn't chipped like your new toy. Glad to see you are having fun with it. I hope to have Hope Systems, Inc. time slips by the end of March. I'm just too busy to get it out to my buddy's garage and do the install until March 20th.

Great times scalbert! When I had my '01 with APR chip with race program and 100 octane gas, I only managed 13.3's at best on a good day. I guess I suck at the drags. What you've done on a chip alone deserves a pat on the back. Great car, I miss it.

crazysellout,
no need for regrets. The B5 S4 was great but not exactly reliable. Had lots of issues with MAF and plumbing and eventually I ditched mine when the turbos developed an eerie whine which pointed towards impending turbo failure. That the CEL started to go and off intermitently. No wonder Audi moved away from forced induction on their new RS car.

This was a rare occasion that I made it to the track. It was opening day and a Saturday. They rarely have Test-n-Tune on Saturdays. What was even more rare was that I didn't have anything major pressing me for time so the window was open.

Even a chipped S4 would have a hard time keeping up with a blown J32A2. A chipped, DPs and exhaust would be able to pull on a supercharged J32A2 but not the chip alone. The torque curves couldn't be more different and the S4 is more about mid-range torque than top end pull.

You know, I haven't paid that much attention to it. I beleive they are Sumitomo but would need to check. Anyway, traction is not an issue with AWD.

Probably not, but it would have passed with authority though.

I dunno. Except for the mods I mentioned, nothing else is planned. If/when the clutch goes out I will upgrade it. But I don't need it yet as I won't launch the car that often. I will be taking it to an auto-x soon and probably Road Atlanta so we'll see what is needed soon enough.
