One of the last times I saw him was him racing his own car. I saw two sets of headlights coming up on me hard. I was in the middle lane and they split left and right. On one side was the SLR and the other his Ferrari. David was driving the SLR and his cousin in his Ferrari. Light went green and they took off with the SLR in the lead and I never saw him again. Must be nice.

I own a 2,008 SLR. Part of the reason that oil changes are so expensive is the titanium screws that hold the steal plates below the engine. Mercedes will not re-use them for what they call safety reasons. My car had its first service at 2.5 years old and 2,500 miles. That service cost $9,800. The car is now five years old and is overdue for it 4 year service, which I have been avoiding because they need to pull the engine in order to change the spark plugs. $18,000. The car only has 4,700 miles, so I purchased a pump to pul the oil out from the dipstick, $39.00 from Walmart.

I buy fully synthetic oil from Wal-Mart for under $20 for my S2000 and can do the whole thing in minutes.
Japanese maintenance > German maintenance

They do have great specials on synthetic oils. Either Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic oils.

Didn't notice the dates on the OP.
When I was working for Honda back around '07, we had a former Honda tech pull up in an SLR. He'd moved over to MB & got certified as an SLR tech. Said the owner had put it into a curb & cracked a rotor, along with some mild body damage.
MB only sold rotors in pairs, at $32k a pair. I suppose since they were to replaced at the same time in 99% of cases. They got 1 rotor at $18k

I'll rephrase it to say that as far as the vehicles we have experience with... German Maintenance = Japanese Maintenance
Then again comparing an SLR to an S2000 isn't exactly apples to apples either. SLR to GTR may be closer...

But that said I just changed my brother's 2006 996 and besides it being a cartridge filter (Porsche really??, it's 2006 and you're still designing engines with cartridge oil filters ) it was a easy oil change. The only thing you have to watch is the aluminum drain plug and stripping it. Why Porsche dealers charges $500 for a 911 oil change is beyond me besides they can get it. Also replaced the brake pads and the Brembo's on Porsche's are only a little harder than the Brembo's on Acura's (brake pad dampers get in the way for putting the pads in.
As for the SLR 10K that's pretty amazing, but then again a pair of distributor cap/rotors for a Ferrari 308/328 are $1K.

+0.5 in general I agree, the Japanese seem to try to get maintenance items within access. Recently changed the oil/filter on my wife's cousin's Subaru and was amused they have a little removal panel on the belly panel just for the drain plug and filter access
