08 Accord Coupe is hit by F150 at 100mph, driver walks away with no injury

Here it is (didn't see it being posted anywhere else):
http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=802711

Check it out. The Accord got hit by a F150 traveling at 100+mph (according to the owner of the Accord) from behind, flipped 4 times, landed upside down, and the driver walked away, with only a few bruises.

I guess that's safety and somewhat explains why cars are getting heavier.

I don't think so . . .

If this was hit from behind at 100mph, he was going 75-80.

not likely.

Hit and Run. Unless they can manage to find the truck, and I doubt they are looking very hard, no big check.

Except that a heavier item will have more force than a lighter one. So cars should be made lighter so that if they collide with anything the impact is less.

Er, not really. As long as SUVs and trucks are popular, lighter cars are not safer. As much as I hate the trend of heavier cars, when it comes to safety a heavier car is better. Look at all the incidents when a car gets hit by a semi-truck..... the car pretty gets destroyed if there's a huge difference in speed but the semi goes on truckin without a problem.

What's going to fly farther if it gets hit from behind at 50 mph, a 10 lb object or a 1000 lb object? Huge discrepancy but you get the point.

I'm sure any other recent midsized car would have fared just as well.

But I'm glad he survived.

the picture from the rear 3/4 angle looks great with the windows knocked out. wish honda still had the rear windows roll down like in the Legend coupe.

if he was going in the 75-80 range and the truck 100 range then he only took a 25-30 mph rear hit. if he wouldve been rolling lets say 30ish he wouldve been f'd. now i give props on the rollover damage but by looking at the rear of the car he got mainly a firm shove off the road. but glad he's okay and good job honda !

I can also say that Honda makes a very strong product.

Here is the result of my similar situation. Only caveat is that I had my wife and 1 year old daughter with me. My wife got the worst of it, a few stitches in her knee. It took us a good year before my kid would get back into a car seat without a fight.

BTW.. I was out 4 grand from that accident.

Yea, most of the damage I believe is from flipping over 4 times and who knows what the car hit as it's slowing down/flipping over from like 90mph (I'd imagine the car sped up after the hit).

not sure the full story here, but this incident sounds similar, although it's pre meditated

This is why I will always have at least one Honda in my garage. Given the results of some crash testing, not all modern sedans/coupes would have a similar result.

I survived a high speed multiple rollover crash in my first car, a 1982 Honda Civic coupe. In fact, I walked away with scratches. I have bought almost exclusively Honda since then.

Kudos to the engineers at Honda.

There is a difference between weight and strength. The ultimate combination would be high strength and low weight, but since such materials are often very expensive, automakers increase strength by adding a lot of heavy material.

But I understand your point.
