03 CLs vs 07 sti
ran my friends sti he bought 8 months ago after he kept thinking i wouldnt stand a chance in my cl. ended up tieing 1st 2nd and 3rd but when i shifted to 4th he lost me. im impressed with my cl! wish i was supercharged so id show him up.

He meant 215 horsepower at the wheels, which is measured on a dyno. It accounts for drivetrain losses, and is the actual power you put down. I think 215whp is pretty accurate for an STi, maybe a little low. 215whp is a little high for a CLS, I'm assuming a 6-speed. I'm 100% sure he isn't mistaking it for a WRX either, if its stock then all years of US WRXs have made 220+ hp, and 215whp is insanely high. Also assuming this is from a roll, which would be nothing ordinary really.
Just what you would expect. If it was from a standstill, then his friend really doesn't know how to drive.
There's a lot to explain so I'll try to keep it basic. As for why a CLS would dyno similar whp numbers, the power from the engine has to travel less to the wheels. It goes from the engine, through the transaxle, through the axles, then to the wheels (tires), and then to the pavement. Its going to lose some power through the process because those drivetrain parts aren't perfectly efficient and thus rob some power in the process.
The STi has to transfer all that power too, the same way through the front wheels, but more of it goes to the rear wheels, in which case it goes from the transaxle, through a driveshaft, then a center differential, then another driveshaft, then through another differential, and finally again through the axles, then to the tires. It will lose more power because it has to travel through more components which is why the STi produces a similar whp output to the CLS. FWD and rear-mounted RWD vehicles have the fewest components for the power to travel through, whereas AWD vehicles, as you can see have the most.
Also there's usually a big discrepancy between one kind of AWD dyno from another, but 215whp for an STi may be a little low, but still seems about right to me.

It really does depend a lot on the driver of the two cars.
I prodded a STi at a stoplight once. He must have known how to drive his car because he launched off the line like a freight train rear-ended him at 50mph. There was no friggin' chance that my TL-S (6 spd) could even keep pace in 1st or 2nd gear. A properly driven STi runs 0-60 in about 4.8 seconds...why out of TL (or CL) territory!

260whp for a stock evo sounds a bit high considering they come with like 286 stock to the crank. but i might be wrong..
my cl-s dynoed at 230whp with headers, intake, exhaust and vtec controller. i still dont think i would have beat a stock sti, but you probably just outdrove your friend. driver is more important anyway, congrats

I like how Evo and STI guys think their cars are invincible. It's funny because my friends 95 Civic spanks modded STIs and Evos all day :-)
Anyways, Congrats on the run bro, represent for the CL!

Its not really a debate, you like NA and I like FI, its all preference. No need to knock it though.

It does sound like the guy in the STI didn't drive too well. I had a CL-S for 6 yrs and now have a Legacy GT, not as much hp as the STI, but close. I highly doubt my CL would take my Legacy off the line given a proper launch. With a good take off the subaru just hooks up and goes where the CL would spin the tires. On the other hand if you do not have a good take off, the subaru can be quite average off the line, like any care I suppose.
I don't really get into all of the numbers, but if I were to race my Legacy and CL, the Leg would get the jump and be a car or two ahead for about 30 seconds and then the CL would run it down and keep a car or two on it until one of them hit their top speeds. That is the impression I get anyway...

Its all good.

But shit, I myself am gonna have to go the FI way with a CT SC cuz I don't wanna wait around for my engine to be re-built and p&p etc. So it's all good!
I truly, its all good, believe that you , its all good, are on crack.
