This has probably been done a million times, but I want to see what you guys would buy today with that kind of budget. The car itself doesn't have to be 40k, thats just the maximum budget.

Any car you can buy OR order (ie Mini Coupe..etc)

(40k US BTW)

NSX, C6 Z06, Z4 M Coupe. Maybe get an AP1 S2000 and throw a whole lot of money into it.

But in reality I'd get a Legacy Spec B and pocket $15k

^Pretty much if you stated that then everyone could narrow the answers down. Because there are a good number of cars you can get for 40K new & used

My wife would kill me if I spent that much on a car but I think I would be able to satisfy the needs of a daily driver/toy/enthusiast car with a Audi S4 Avant.

Based on his original post it looks as if he's asking the forum a general question as to what we would get/want. Kind of a fun question versus a "what should I buy" thread...

For me, it would depend on which country I lived in:

Japan: 2009 Subaru Legacy S402

Europe: 2006 / 2008 MB E55 AMG or Audi RS4 or VW GTI and pocket some change

USA: CTS-V, the latest model year for the $.

I don't know that you can get a 2008 S5 for that price either ... Without a ton of miles.

Here's what's available in that price range on Autotrader w/in 100 miles of me:

370Z Nismos
Cayman S (2006-07)
Challenger SRT-8s
Shelby Mustang GT500s (2007-2009)
C5 Corvette Z06s
Various C6 Corvettes
1992 Acura NSX w/19k for $40k
2003 911 C4S w/22k for $39,500
2000 Viper GTS w/24k for $39k

Other than the NSX the rest are a poo-poo platter of meh for that much money.

But, if you looked at other stuff you might be able to find cars like the '69 Mach 1, '67 Austin Healy 3000, '69 GTO, or a '63 Corvette convertible.

It's somewhat depressing how little $40k gets you these days ... If it were me, I'd wait another year or so and hope at that point E9x M3s, B8 S5s, and C63s start showing up in that range.
