The Review from epinions

no it does not have voice...

Pros
Compass, Forward placed buttons

Cons
Average detection

The Bottom Line
Nothing new over past units by Whistler, still does the job in providing warning. Looking for better protection, look higher than Whistler, Cobra and Uniden.

Full Review
The Whistler Group has and is introducing varies detectors to the many consumers on the market. They compete with Uniden and Cobra, and lower budget Escort, and Beltronics detectors. Whistler has provider middle class and below detectors since the 90s, and mid-upper class in the 80s.

Why the Change? Well Whistler is keeping the average day consumer in mind. Not a lot of people want to buy a unit over $200, they believe it is a waste of money. Whistler and other manufactures of radar detectors, offer features over detection. Features is what sells a consumer to get such a unit, and believe that it does everything (plus) they need if for.

Well the Whistler DE-1765 compass radar detector is the everything and plus for an everyday consumer. The Whistler 1765 provides features, but provides average detection of the average detector.

So what does it pack?
-It comes with a Windshield mount, power cord, instruction manual, and the detector.
-The Detector provides compass, VG-2 alert, Safe Alert, Safety Warning Systems (SWS), RU Alert (Are you Alert), 60 text message display, radar detection (US), laser detection, and a New Swival display.

The 1765 is not providing anything new to the line-up of Whistler models, other than a 10 degree pivet display. This unit is just like the older 1675 unit. The sounds and selections are identical. The main reason for the update, F.C.C codes had to be followed by Whistler and other Detector producers by August of 2002. If not that will face charges of interference of other Electronics devices.

This odd shaped unit appears too bulky, but is no heavier than others. The design in interesting, but acquired. The width of this unit is almost like older detectors. With the Windshield mount attached, you wonder if the suction cups can hold this wide of a unit.

The Compass on this unit does increments of 5 degrees (0,5,85,90,95,180,185 etc...) followed by the direction of travel (N,NE,E, etc...) The compass is accurate, unless approaching high field power lines and traffic lights.

The Pivot display is a nice feature and helps only a little. Nothing worth buying the unit for on this feature.

The Frontal placed buttons can be a plus. If you mount your detector high, the buttons become a plus to the unit. It is not like other models provided by Whistler (excluding 1745, 1750, and 1760.)

The overall performance by the 1765 is not impressive. It provides similar numbers like the 1675 tested. Comparing to other detectors, the 1765 provide either the same or a slight better protection over the Cobra 9560 and Uniden 987.

. . . . .Cty. . . . . Hwy
X band . 0.3-0.75. . 0.30-1.25 mil
K band . 0.25-0.60 . 0.25-1 mil
Ka band 0.20-0.50 . 0.20-1 mil

Laser- less than 10% chance of a clean signal when operated correctly.

If you are a budget minded buyer, than the 1765 unit is yours, or op for the 1760 unit which offers similar functions for the same price. Plus, the 1760 is not wide as this unit. You can find the 1765 for around $50-70 on ebay or new by sellers for around $100.

personally, i have had good experiences with Whistler... my two other radars are also whistler (one with the voice, and one very old model) are still being used in my parent's MB and camry... it has saved my butt numerous times and i have lived both in NJ and TX... used in both.... for those of you that live in states where police use POP mode, it will show up as pulse on the unit... i mean it has some cool features like RU-Alert (helps keep you awake if you are feeling sleepy at the wheel)

i mean it isn't a V1 or Escort 8500 x50... but i have to agree with the review i just posted, its a great detector for its price...

well first to paypal 20$ to andrewchau@hotmail.com ... it will be shipped the next day...
