It's use is if you're driving by and you know it's a false-alarm (ie. automatic door openers like walgreens, walmart, hotel doors) than you press the mute button so it will stop buzzing the crap out of you.
Or when you know it's a cop and you already see where the cop is, than you press mute because there's no need for it to keep buzzing if you already identified where the source is coming from.

When I press the mute button, the beep quiets down (Depending on what setting I set the 'Mute Volume' to) but the radar still lights up and points into which direction the radar source is coming from. Pretty much all the mute button does is just quiet the detector, but it still detects and lights up just as it would when it's not muted. Only difference is you don't hear the beeping, but if you look at the detector you will still see it detecting.
I would assume the escort is also the name.

i have the blue edition 8500, the light will always blink to alert you its detecting something. The mute button just stops the unit from beeping, the light will still continue to blink until you're out of the laser/radar radius.

• Full unit check-up
• Latest software upgrade
• Calibration to optimize sensitivity
• ESCORT's proprietary signal rejection software
• Alcohol cleaning of PC board
• Includes SuperCup mount .
The S7 model is not supported for the TSR update.
In the tradition of ESCORT providing innovative detection solutions, our engineers developed proprietary Traffic Sensor Rejection (TSR) software to eliminate those annoying false alerts! If you have purchased an ESCORT detector within the last year then you probably have Escort's proprietary TSR on your Escort detector.
Basically, with the TSR software added to the radar, you will have less false alarms for a more quieter ride

Just FYI Champ and everyone else - a good thing about the 8500 X50 is that you can mute an alert by pressing mute, but the x50 will beep if a different signal is heard.
IE you're parked near a walmart and it goes off so you mute it. It still will say how strong the alert is and blink. But say a cop comes a second later with radar on - it will override the mute and say what the new signal is. It does a good job of prioritizing signals. Ka from cops usually override K and X from doors, etc.
Love my blue version!
