http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D90-Digi...8489179&sr=1-3

It's a great camera with a pretty good lens, it'll also do a little video, (it pushes you to $1175, but worth it) then you'll want http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-...8489320&sr=8-1

It's even cheaper at Amazon ($799) and, if you don't mind dealing with rebates, you can get it bundled with an MP980 multifunction printer and a 2GB SD card at Costco for $799.

It's a consumer, mid entry level camera. With Nikon it's a D90 or D5000 under 1k. Plus it will be a body to keep for yrs. Better than buying the lower priced one and then less than a yr later having to buy another camera.

I guess I thought the D90 was closer to a Canon 40D or so.

Well it is close to a 40D. But I've know many people that have Nikon and Canon entry level bodies that after owning for 6 months to a yr, I need to upgrade.

Plus you can put any DSLR on full auto and shoot it like a glorified point and shoot. Once you learn more, you can start delving into the creative modes.

The d80 and as well the d90 have a great learning curve.

I think d5000 had an even easier learn curve.
Give or take you lose abit more flexibility with it than the proconsumer level, but it will keep you busy for awhile till you need to upgrade.

I've kept my d80 for about a year and upgraded to a better body when I needed it for school shooting.
