Ub bulls vs uconn 56k warning

nikon d300
70-200 vr 2.8
mb-d10 grip aa batteries giving me the 8fps

Iso around 1600-2000
shutter speed 1/400 or 1/500 worked best

I shoot for my college's paper so its mainly all stock photo for the paper.
basically player face ball and try keep the least amount of opposing team in the pictures. (stock photo for away games)

so i messed up thinking my white balance was good at 4500k.

Too bad my home team starting roster is all darker skinned, so when they subbed the white guy in i was wondering why he was yellow...

Anyway i coward out and then set to auto whiteblance at first it was a bit blue so i adjust the auto white balance to be a bit more yellow ish cuz the blue hue was quite off.

Anyway enjoy

i apologize if their not good enough its buffalo... haha...

The iso is pretty good after some resizing. I don't really like pushing it but coming from a d80 its way way better.

the mb-d10 got me some extra shots, man everyone there today was either d3s,
canon d1 series.

The last shot is best shot.

The players really stick out from the background in that shot with the lack of depth. and its the sharpest image.

I'd be willing to bet you can shoot the next game you attend and over expose by a 1/2 - 2/3 of a stop. Then a little post processing, bring your black back. even when you have a deep focus and all that action your foreground players will stick out a bit more.

Thanks my friend suggested me shooting in raw instead.

1/400 iso 1600 shutter gave me some balanced shots, but then i ran into the problem when i hit brighter spots of the floor they would be blownout

so i opt for 1/500 on iso 2000 to even things out.

Some else suggested that as well, thanks for the info!

definitely shoot RAW.

There is nothing wrong with having some hotspots in your image. Look at my surf pics, I let a lot of things go with those. sky, sometimes the water.

So long as its balanced and looks interesting as opposed to distracting, then roll with it.

Some really nice shots. Your timing on most of them was great.

It's odd - I've never seen any martial arts done with sneakers on.

White balance and focus is off in many of them, but shooting in RAW next time will help with the WB. With shutter speeds around 1/400 or 1/500, camera shake shouldn't be an issue, so it might be your focusing method. I don't know much about the Nikons, but I'm sure they have a tracking mode. Either try that or pick a focus point to use.

I'm using dynamic af, I think its off cuz the camera is marking the middle of 21 points but since the games pretty quick the camera tries to lock on what ever it can.

My friend suggested trying 9 point focus when the players are closer.
