Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide lamp. Its a very bright, hot, daylight source that is focusable with different lenses.

My cousin works at a grip supply company in Toronto servicing the big studios in the area and they stock the huge ARRI's. They were testing one a few months ago and my cousin managed to light his pants on fire just by standing in front of it.

That diffusion panel would soften the light like a soft box, but there's no softbox in the world that could hold up to the heat that thing generates, so it has to be open and spill controlled with a flag like the image above.

Correct.

HMIs are incredibly hot. They do usually have metal barn doors like most movie lighting, but a lot of times they are treated as you see in the pic. There is a choice of diffusion and I see color on a 4x4 gel frame and then you you flags to shape the light and control spill to your desire.
