Took a Studio Workshop last weekend - Pics

One of the guys on POTN put together a studio/lighting/model workshop last weekend. It was real laid back with some good info, nice equipment (All kinds of ABees), cool studio...

... oh yeah, and some models.

Here's a couple of pics from the shoot. C&C on the lighting/technical aspects of the images is appreciated. I'm not so sure I've nailed the PP.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68088083@N00/2596742136/" title="Kellie - Studio Workshop June 2008-7478 by MoeRonn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3279/2596742136_6c5913576e_o.jpg" width="533" height="800" alt="Kellie - Studio Workshop June 2008-7478" /></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68088083@N00/2596742172/" title="Kellie - Studio Workshop June 2008-7491 by MoeRonn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3043/2596742172_a2dc7ac3e5_o.jpg" width="533" height="800" alt="Kellie - Studio Workshop June 2008-7491" /></a>

For some reason, exif was stripped. I'll work on that later.

The funny thing is I asked Miz about this a while back and also sixsixfour.

The guy (Ronn Canzano) is holding more workshops - one this weekend, I think. If you are interested, PM him through POTN (rcanzano). I did the two day "newbie" session to learn a bit about the lighting equipment and setup, plus a bit about technique. PM me if you want more info, too.

BTW, the studio is in Orange and he rents it out, too. There are several "sets". I need to process some of the other models and post them, but I liked these the most.

its all good.

I'd probably get bored...not because I think I know everything, I'm just not a classroom type of learner.

I should look into local studios around here. I know there are a couple.

um, yeah...good shots...so about these models...did they all dress like they were ready to begin their porn career or was it just the mood of the 'workshop'...?

on a serious note, good lighting...personally, maybe just a little bit more brightness...do you have a setup shot of where the lights were? did you get to place the lights for your shots or were they already in place?

It was not even close to a classroom setup. There were only three photogs and we just sat/stood around the studio while Ronn (no relation to MoeRonn) went over some things. It was really laid back, but still cool.

The model session was the next day - spending roughly 40 minutes with each of the three models - all in different studios with different sets and lighting.

Heh. No, this was the only lingerie model, though none of the models were overly conservative. Regardless of the outfits, she seemed to "connect" with the camera the most.

Yeah, I noticed all of my shots were well underexposed (at least 1-1.5 stops) so this is even after bumping it up a bit in LR. As for the lights, they were generally placed, but we had freedom to move them around a bit. For this studio, there were three lights. I can't remember exact model numbers, so they may be off, but there were three lights - 1 AB1600 camera right with softbox, 1 AB800 ringflash with octogon softbox camera left and one AB800 on an overhead boom for a hair light. This studio was a little tight, but still workable.

The main studio had 6 strobes. The third studio had two hot white lights and a bunch of par cans. Pics will go up later.

Did he pre set the lighting, or were you guys able to light and tweak yourselves?

I dont think your shots are underexposed at all.

He started with a pretty good setup, but we tweaked however we wanted.

BTW, we shot while tethered to a computer and flash sync, but it wasn't really a limiting issue, for the most part.

And the original shots were definitely underexposed, so I pushed them up a stop or so in LR.

yeah but there is nothing with that...People who shot film used to do it all the time...you'd gain a thicker negative that way. I think its a more common practice for filmmaking though. We still do it.

Was it all flash? or was there regular lighting as well. Flash photography just doesnt interest me for some reason.

Heh. I remember shooting a stage show with ISO1600 film and having the lab push it a stop when developing.

Two of the sets were all strobes and one was all hot lights. The strobes were easier to expose, even though you were tweaking. The hot lights were shot at ISO800, f2.8-5.6 and still only getting shutter speeds around 1/80-1/125. It was a cool setup and I'll get more pics up later this weekend.

Unfortunately, I forget to get pics of the lighting setups.

Edit - that roll of film was like $15 about 15 years ago. Some fancy Kodak crap that actually worked..

Bro, sorry I couldnt make it. your shots look waay better than I had expected. a little bit too much emphasis on the front and not enough rim light to show the edges of the model. but otherwise great pics!

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

No worries. I know he's planning on holding more - both newbie and model workshops.

I know the lighting lacks a little depth. The hair light was at the center of the sofa on a boom and kind of a pain to move, so I didn't With only about 40 minutes, I didn't want to spend most of the time on the lighting. Next time I would plan my shots better to stay in one lit area, then modify the lighting and move on to the next area and shots.

It was $200 total. $75 for the first day to go over lighting setup, etc. And $125 for the model shoot.

Since the photos are only for non-commercial/promo use, and all of the models were clothed, the costs were pretty low.

I know you had a post previously about buying some Alien Bees and then were considering a different setup - well, here you'd get to play with the Alien Bees. They were nice to work with, but I can definitely see how you wouldn't want to carry them around.

You should go if you have the time and money.

Basically you can use the images for your portfolio and post on sites for comments and critique, but you can't sell them. You also need to supply the models with a couple of images for their portfolios.

And I don't think any of these models do nudes. I'm sure if there is enough interest, they could setup a nude shoot with other models - but it will definitely cost more.

Not really. So far the only thing I have been using to edit is LR, so just a little bit of cloning/healing here and there. I'm sure you can find tons of info about it on POTN.

A few pics of the other models:

Cathy (Rockin Kitty) - It was kind of tough getting the correct exposures were:

Katherine - I played with the processing a bit more on these:
