Thinking of getting rid of my DSLR

Basically I am thinking of selling my Xti and sd870is and getting a G11 instead. I really haven't used a slr weekly since I had my original digital rebel and because of this my XTi still feels a bit like a stranger. I certainly know the controls well enough, but I usually spend the first 40 or 50 pictures figuring out what works best every time I use it. With my rebel I used it every week and was able to pick it up and shoot pretty much anything because of the familiarity. I used to use all my lenses and accessories but I really can't be bothered to do much more than attach a flash now.

This is all a personal problem, but I don't see my habits changing. I take my sd870 everywhere I go and feel quite a bit more comfortable with it, but there are some situations where the iso performance and manual conrolls are quite limiting.

Unfortunately there is also a superficial part of me that doesn't wan't to let go of looking like the biggest camera nerd in the family at parties.

It's a shame you're not wanting to use them anymore, because you shoot well. That said, if you're not using them, but think you would use the G11, by all means sell them and get something that will get some use! The G11 looks to be a really great camera.

It comes down to what you think you'll have with you at any given time. If you tend to leave the SLR home, due to its bulk, and end up missing shots because of it, maybe going smaller is a good way to go for you.

The G series cameras are very good and capable of pro-quality output. Of course, you give up the speed and responsiveness of an SLR system, which is always a sticking point for me, but if your style of shooting dictates that isn't a big deal, then you're set.

I have an SD700 that is supremely portable and takes great photos, and it goes with me when the bigger rig is just too much. Smaller cameras these days are viable options, and the G11 looks to be a beauty. Just my worth.

Good luck.

Not using your dSLR a lot you shouldn't miss much going back to a premium p&s. I know I missed it too much and sold my G9.

I love the G series, just from sample shots Ive seen. I wanna get one one day. I feel like if I had one, I would use it most of the time and only take the DSLR for "special" occasions and objectives.

I want one, too. It would be great for outings where shooting isn't my main objective, but I think there may be good opportunities.

Hmm, I didn't think about responsiveness. That is another downside of the sd I didn't think of, but still my movement is usually described as sloth like anyway.

Thanks all, It's good to know I'm not crazy anyway.

I am waiting for dpreview or somebody equally anal retentive to do a review though.

I don't see a reason to wait, it's basically the same as the G9 and G10. It will have fewer mp than the G10 with the newer software for better images. Plus the redesigned the body so it can be handled better.

It should have better face recognition for AF and the newer improved movement detection.

The G series is great and I also thought about getting one for times when I don't want/can't take my 50D. I might go for the waterproof one instead (can't think of the model name right now).

The tongue as depicted is appearing red on my screen. Have you color calibrated recently, or do I need to?

That DPR review for the G11 should be out within a few weeks, I'd guess. You will get some shutter lag with cams like the G series, but it's not horrible. They just aren't great for shooting things like sports. If you have a Best Buy near you, they usually them on display and you can see how it is for yourself.

Olympus makes the water and shock proof they are pretty sweet my friend came back from a water rafting trip and had shots to show.

He was going ask me bring my d300 but i'd probably wouldn't want to test those waters.

Its good that the g11 reverted back and took out mp instead of sqeezing more pixels in a small censor i remember people talking about it and should help the high iso a lot.

True, the shutter lag is a little annoying. I realized that after I'd been using my dslr for a long time and then used my mom's p&s last year. Pretty big difference.

Just a quick update. I ordered a s90 today for 399 with a 30 dollar promo code at newegg. The only camera I am selling is my sd870, and hopefully I will find time next year to play with my dslr again.
