Carrying camera equipment and school stuff is going to be tough and heavy.

I have a LowePro Computrekker AW and it carries pretty much all of my camera gear listed below and a 15" laptop with extended battery. The main problem is that it is heavy and really bulky. I try to use it only for actual travel/transport and then use the 6MDH for day use.

gear:
30D
17-55 f/2.8 EF-S IS
70-200 L f/4 IS
50 f/1.8 II (nifty fifty)
85 f/1.8
430EX
rocket blower
Canon A570IS (P&S)
BG-E2 grip (sometimes)
plus random accessories (batteries, remote triggers, etc)

Lowepro 350 AW allows for a 15" laptop and provides a bit more room than the 200.

Yeah it's a slingshot. but the 300 and the 350 have hip supports so it takes some of the load off your shoulder. I'd recommend it. I use it, and I have 3 cameras and accessories in mine. No issues with hurting after lugging it around.

I have the Slingshot 200AW as well and I am looking for a new bag. I don't need to carry a computer or books but I would like one that will take my XSI, or future 50D, with the EF 100-400 mounted.

Trew - will the 300AW hold that combo, or even the Flipside 300 I guess?

Thanks

Ken

You might want to look at Tenba, check their site. I think they have a messenger bag that might work.

I have it, and was going to write a review sometime soon. Love it. Cant say enough good stuff about it. Will write it up with pics later. If you buy, buy the large.

The 300 aw doesnt have the compartment for the laptop right?
I just really need to mount a book or binder in it really for temporary so i can free up my hands.

I'm still young so the sling is fine until i start getting crazy on gear.

Correct, the 300 does not have a laptop compartment. And its set up like like the other slings, so there isnt room for one, not big enough.

sorry this might not help in your situation, but I was looking for a backpack a few months back to upgrade from my 200aw too.

I ended up with a Crumpler Sinking Barge. I am kinda satisfied, but really there isn't too much room. Could fit my 5D w/ 2 mid sized lenses + 1 attached, but probably not your 70-200 2.8, unless maybe you stick it in the top compartment. The top compartment isn't that big, but bigger than my SS 200. It has a laptop sleeve, and a "magazine sleeve". I am able to fit my 15" dell and my 13" macbook in it at the same time, along w/ all the power cables and stuff. So might be able to fit a thin book/binder, but the part that doesn't extend all the way down isn't too big.

My only semi gripe is that the bag itself is pretty heavy, so once it is loaded up it is really heavy, but it has plenty of straps and stuff to distribute the load. It also seems pretty big for the amount of stuff you can fit in it. probably cause there is a pretty good amount of padding and stuff.

OP, check out http://www.tenba.com/

They have backpacks, messenger bags, etc... It is really well made stuff. I am constantly impressed with my Messenger Large bag from tenba.

I have an older model Tenba (the DB-15C) but you can check it out
in terms of quality/etc.

http://lishutterbug.com/toys/tenba/

By 'check it out' I mean I live on Long Island too, so we can hook up.
I've been beating the crap out of this bag for 4 years now, and it's as good as new.
It's great. If you have a moderate amount of gear, I can't imagine using a sling.
It's just too much weight. Backpack + chest strap all the way.

I have one. It does soften up a 'bit' but it keeps it's rigidity, so the arm straps are going to be a bit rough... God bag, though. I used to travel to Mexico with my camera gear and laptop and it worked great. I transferred to a smaller bag once I arrived, though.
